I hung out with herdfan.

Why the **** is a friendly and decent man voting for a debauched and racist mental eunich?
I personally have a hard time pegging half the country that way, I honestly don't get why anyone would want to vote for Trump but I think we all have our reasons for voting the way we do. I have some friends that are Conservative and as long as we don't talk politics everyone gets along just fine, it's those who can't help themselves (on either side) that I tend to stay away from.

I would get a cup of coffee with Herdfan any time, we differ on politics but otherwise he seems like a decent guy all around.

Did he smell like cheese?

And if so, was it at least good cheese?

Agreed. But for me, that’s what it makes it all the more confusing and confounding. I don’t know why he’s hitching his wagon with a base full of Klansmen, racists and people who will flat out tell you they DONT agree with democracy and think this country needs a dictator. It’s in their rhetoric, their shirts, signs, flags and decals. It’s in their podcasts. It’s on their news stations where they promote lies and white replacement theory.

It’s not just a fringe element of the party, and certainly not a fringe element in the Trump base. And those two things are pretty much one and the same now - this is no longer the Republican Party.

I don’t have an answer for that, but in general terms like I said in another post the left and right are getting completely different news and focus. Sometimes it’s less about voting for somebody and more about voting against whoever you think will be worse for your interests and values. Not saying herdfan believes this specifically, but a lot of people on the right believe Harris is going to throw open the border and use a massive percentage of their taxes to give criminals a cozy life. Every time the government is slow to respond or drops the ball it’s specifically because your tax dollars are going to illegals. Unfortunately the only viable alternative to that in our fucked up reality is Trump.

One of my better friends that I've met since moving back to CA is a die hard Trump guy, also the nicest guy you'll ever meet and we just knew we wouldn't agree on those issues and tabled them. Everyone has their reasons for voting the way they do but it does not make them bad people IMO. I also think the way we act online (especially social media) is very different than how we are face to face, most are able to look past these things.

Makes sense, but is that problem bigger than our democracy? I seem to remember Herdfan giving a Bill Barr-esque answer - it’s ok that Trump tried to overthrow democracy and may return to the White House because “it didn’t work”. As if he isn’t already trying to undermine our elections again.

Obviously, I agree with most of what you guys say, but since any question I would have mostly pertains to our discussions on these boards, that’s the most obvious question to ask. It’s also a bit surprising to me people put that issue over democracy. I mean, I still think our healthcare is screwed, but I wouldn’t vote for Harris if she could guarantee me free healthcare but also did everything else Trump has done.

What I get from these folks is “we will vote for someone who handles this issue, regardless of anything else.” Which maybe there is no answer for that I will understand.

Next time let me know, if I'm able to be in the area I'll join you guys.

The meetup happened because I went to Sedona AZ with my parents and he lives close to Sedona. BTW, amazing photo location. We were initially going to go for a hike, which we did, but he showed up in his ATV and generously took me on several offroad trails that would have cost hundreds of dollars to do the tourist version. We even buzzed by some of the tourist jeeps. Losers! :ROFLMAO:

Hopefully he'll come to our area for a visit.

I don’t think he believes this, but on right with their never ending accufessions and “I know you are, but what am I?” tactics they are being told that it’s Harris, not Trump, that is the threat to democracy as evidenced by the pers/prosecution of Trump, his coconspirators, and “patriots”. Plus the old chestnut of millions of illegal voters who apparently only vote Democrat. On that one, since they are such world class accufesers I seriously hope Democrats already have a plan in place to investigate votes.

Most of the conservatives I know are generous and pleasant to be around. Most of the time you can find common ground but don’t agree on the degree of the problem or the solution. I know some who are open to and accepting of information they aren’t getting and don't reflexively respond with "OK, but....".

I also try to take life experience into consideration. I once had a heated conversation with a conservative because initially his view came off as blatantly racist but digging deeper it came from personal experience and not the news. Specifically he was mad about losing contracts because it was decided it should be awarded to a minority owned business that in some cases are known for subpar work. I’m still not completely cool with his view because most of our history and even currently business often favors white people, but at least I have a better idea where he’s coming from.

I think online we also tend to tie people to every extreme of their side which isn’t accurate and often causes things to go off the rails.

@Herdfan next time you are in the Bay Area you gotta let me give you a personalized tour of the city, I love being able to show the beauty of it, especially to those who always only hear what's bad about it. There's a ton of great sights I would treat you to.

I've lived in a deep red state for many years and had lots of friends and colleagues who were Trump supporters in 2016, though it wasn't obvious from our daily interactions. But I think things have shifted considerably since then. It's hard for me to understand why they'd still vote for him given what he's done and plans to do. It might be an extreme edge case, but I wouldn't want to have anything to do with a neo-Nazi, for example, even if they seemed reasonable otherwise. (Not saying this applies to Herdfan by any means — I've enjoyed our interactions in other threads and would like to meet.) So it's weird. I just wish we could go back to the days where Democrats, Independents, and Republicans mostly got along, even though they didn't agree on policy. But first we have to make sure we have a democracy to work with.
