They're going to end up preaching themselves into a North Korea-like dictatorship, where everyone has to have a Trump decal on their car and a putrid image of him on their wall. But in a sign of progress, it is the males who will be forced to cover their heads with an ill-fitting, cheaply-made MAGA hat when in public.

I think most of Trump's base, especially the people who show up at his rallies, have no inclination to question anything he tells them, no matter how mendacious or outrageous, especially since they repeatedly hear much the same from Fox News and other right-wing outlets. That elected Republican officials also support Trump just reinforces their view that his pronouncements should be accepted as is, especially since they also like the "strength" he appears to demonstrate. Are these folks stupid or brainwashed? Maybe it's a combination of both, though I suspect many of them are at least intelligent enough to apply some thought to other things in their daily life like mortgage offers or business dealings.
 
He will not be running for re-election as a democrat. He may or may not run as an independent. But run he will, as he needs to grift as much as possible before his trial starts.

In the US, though, it was always that. Those on whom we originally bestowed "patriot", those who fought to form this country, were exactly the opposite: they were treasonous traitors. It really is a word that has no meaning other than what I say it means.

If Trump had done everything Menedez was accused of - and let’s face it, we know he’s done similar and worse - the GOP talking points would be defending Trump. “This is normal in politics! Business as usual”.

The sad part is, now that the Supreme Court has made bribery and being bought and paid for by billionaires normal, they’re won’t be far off the mark with those arguments.

Total different set of standards. Remember the Republican outrage over Al Franken? I guess if his victim had actually been awake and physically assaulted they would've made him their nominee.

While I won't say that Senate Democrats covered themselves in glory wrt Menendez, keep in mind that the most vociferous defense of Menendez did indeed come from the GOP. I can't imagine why now ...

He deserves whatever he gets, I get that Trump has been untouchable but that doesn't mean we need to let it slide for everyone else. This was pretty egregious.

I'd amend your statement slightly to I hope he gets what he deserves. None of this "we need to go easy on him because he's old and served in office for so many years."
 
He dodged one bullet and learned nothing in his first trial. Probably that he thought he could get away with it.
