It refers to a method of synchronizing different threads - you can have one thread stop and wait for a memory address to change, and another thread that changes the memory address as a signal that the first thread can proceed. Something like that.

More flavor - FUTEX = Fast Userspace muTEX. It's a neat high performance type of mutex which originated on Linux.

oh, and "mutex" = mutual exclusion.
