Tim Cook stepping down

I suppose Cook dispelled the perception that you need a rock star CEO and the media just tried to force that on him whenever possible.
History has yet to determine Cook’s legacy. He certainly ballooned the company into a giant industry-leading competitor. But will he be remembered for not sufficiently diversifying the supply chain outside of China? Not going all in on AI? Not coming up with the next big product to replace iPhone?

Who knows?

I honestly don't understand the demand for MORE AI!!!! For what exactly? I don't think enthusiasts even know. They might as well demand Apple products feature more Bitcoin.
You need enough AI. I think Apple’s been threading the needle well. But things can change. Maybe suddenly there’s huge demand for AI stuff and Apple is forced to rely on paying others. Maybe not.

Reading the article, I think it was a silly thing to say. I think diversifying and reinforcing the supply chain so that they get all the RAM/storage they need at reasonable prices, while not being screwed if China attacks Taiwan, is a much more important issue.

I think Cook will be remembered and appreciated for several initiatives that were undertaken during his time as CEO, notably the development of Apple silicon, the foray into wearables, and the expansion of Apple services. I also think he's done better on the AI front than many give him credit for, despite some missteps. The brewing mistrust of AI amongst consumers will affect whether his approach will turn out to be right.

Certainly, we won't know whether he did enough about the supply chain, with the understanding that some things are beyond Apple's control. As for the next home run product, I agree that nobody outside the company can say.

I'm looking forward to the John Ternus era, though I don't expect any quick changes or surprises.

I've been a vocal opponent for a long but the LLM has me convinced, finding solutions is way easier when you can have a conversation with the AI that works through it with you rather than googling several rabbit holes. That said I'm hoping (even through the advancement of AI) that it can utilize less CPU usage and conversely power consumption because right now it's a power hungry bottomless pit.

As for Tim I wish him well and happiness in his retirement, he hung in there through a lot after Jobs passed.

Remember when Gurman said Srouji was leaving? Now he’s got Ternus’ job. Gurman, Gurman, Gurman.

So the next question is who gets promoted to replace Srouji, and do I know them?

And the answer is Sri.

I think putting all the teams under one person makes sense as long as they can collaborate and pull in roughly the same direction.

The advanced technologies group is interesting. I wonder if they’ll be charged with R&D for future products that may never come to fruition. But there has to be a mechanism to avoid spending too much money and effort on dead ends.

It’s funny, because there is a joke that “advanced technologies” in silicon valley is often code for “we don’t know what to do with this person, so stick them someplace where they can’t cause any trouble.”

By the way, in my final couple years at AMD I was the manager of advanced technologies. So I can vouch for the joke :-)

In this case, though, I think it just means that they are responsible for at least the first versions of things like wireless silicon, etc. I don’t think Apple ever does pure R&D without the intention that there is a product at the end of it.
