What are you doing today?

Our PTO got converted to DTO and of course that's the end result of such a switch. :|
Unlimited PTO is the worst way to possible way to handle vacation that I've ever had to work with. If you are responsible and lead/manage all of your own projects it means someone else has to deal with it while you are away and it often lead to people not being able to handle it and client escalations. Upper management is fully aware of this and knows you won't want to abandon your clients either, in fact they rely on it.

Most of the time when I went on PTO it turned into a total shit show for either my company or the client. As a result you work through it and stop planning anything that would mean you couldn't quickly jump on a call to handle escalations. In my last couple of years I was never able to get more than a week per year and even then it was pure stress the whole time.

I'm sure it depends on the job/role but as a consultant unlimited PTO is the biggest scam out there. It made me long for the days mandatory 2 or 3 weeks per year.

at least you have vacation days. We have “take vacation whenever you want” with the caveat that if you actually take off then all the work still needs to get done and your colleagues and management will take notice that you dared to exercise the privilege. The end result being nobody takes off more than a week in a year, but unspent vacation doesn’t get returned to you as pay when you quit.

My daughter has unlimited PTO. She ends up taking around 10 days off, but she has also been off since December 19th and won't go back until Monday 1/5. They also close at noon Memorial Day thru Labor Day.

Unlimited PTO? How does that work?
While I can't speak for his daughter, for most it's essentially a scam for companies who know you'll never be able to use it, see my post a couple back.

In theory, you just take off when you want. In practice, peer and management pressure prevent you from taking off even two weeks, and instead of banking unused vacation days so that you get paid for them when your employment ends, you get nothing. It’s a horrible scam.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

I'm a salaried engineer, and my experience is similar.

"You can take the time, but we're still responsible for the (mandated by management) deadlines". And the time I took off for Christmas, I come back to find that the other engineer on my feature basically just slash and burned some rather important functionality and "deprecated" work that I had been working on without any discussion or understanding. This was after trying to get him to review the changes I was making, and giving him opportunities to provide input on the approach before I did the work. That's the frustrating part. The fact that I had done what I can to collaborate, but he just basically went heads down and ignored both the senior engineer and architect.

Honestly, I wish I was just a little further in my career, as I'd likely be at my FIRE number and could simply just walk away from the trash fire that modern software engineering has seemingly become in larger orgs.

What could possibly go wrong?

Wait, what was that other "special military operation" that was going to be over in a few days again?

Happy day, look what came in the mail! @Cmaier want me to give you access to my Plex so you can watch too?

Had vitrectomy and cataract replacement on right eye this morning. Unlike last time, I feel like I got hit by an elephant truck. In the eye. Tylenol making me slightly less violently icky. Can’t see shite, eye is padded over this time, until tomorrow - not even removed for drops.

Wow. Glad it's over, but sorry your eye is feeling like that. What did the ophthalmic surgeon say about the procedure and time course of pain?

nuthin. Bubble will be gone in 7-10 days, at least, so that’s good. I have to sleep on my right side (which i found surprising since it’s the right eye), but it’s better than a month on my stomach. I go see the surgeon in the morning and will hopefully have an update.

That you weren't told anything about what to expect for pain drives me nuts. One of the most important responsibilities I had when I did invasive procedures on patients was setting expectations for pain and how to deal with it. Hope you get good news in the morning.

Glad that you can sleep on your side, though. Staying prone for a week or so would be tough.
