Which cultural icons or major historical influences are still with us?

I remember this guy from my teenage years – today is his 92nd birthday

Add these heavyweights to the list:

Dick Van Dyke
Mel Brooks
Willie Nelson
Julie Andrews
Dick Cavett
I'll add a few more:

Julie Newmar (my favorite Catwoman)
George Takei ("Course laid in!")
Sandy Koufax (saw him pitch at Dodger Stadium)
David Attenborough (I'lll watch any video with him narrating)
Berry Gordy (because, Motown)
Buzz Aldrin (punched someone for accusing him of lying about his moon landing)
Clint Eastwood (Make my day!)
Barbara Eden (loved I Dream of Jeannie)
John Williams (so many memorable movie scores)

This thread is a yard away from turning into a dead pool.

Too late for that. Death Pool games run from January 1st to December 31st. The game can be entertaining, sad, perverse, and educational, and it requires a full-size handbasket. I scored 22 points on 2 unique picks last year.

Says who, can't we come up with our own dates/rules?
The one I play in has very sensible rules

You get 13 picks
  • a valid pick must be a living human, over 18 (because, choosing children is just too over-the-line of bad taste)
  • they must be known for something other than just being near death's door
  • if your pick dies during the game, your score for them is 100 - ( their age at time of death )
  • you cannot (knowingly) pick someone who posts here
  • murder to gain points is not allowed
We could start a deathpool game any time, but the calendar year is the easiest. Players should at least have some time to compile a proper list. I would suggest a specific thread for the game.

Here is an interesting one. Anatoli Bugorski is 83. Forty Seven years ago, he was checking on malfunctioning particle accelerator equipment when it suddenly activated and fired a proton beam through his head. Doctors, believing he had received a fatal dose of radiation, stood and watched, as he completed his doctoral thesis and then return to work in the lab.

And here is a face we all remember:

Mohammad Saeed al Sahaf was the guy we knew 20-some years ago as "Baghdad Bob". I believe he has a direct line to the advisory committee at BS-Central.

Can we change that to tomorrow?

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow
Creeps in this petty pace
To the last syllable of recorded time
And all our yesterdays have
Lighted Republicans the dusty way to death
Out! Out! brief candle
Felon-ONE's but a walking shadow
A poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more
'Tis a tale, told by the Idiot, full of sound and fury
Signifying nothing
