Apple M5 rumors

I’m torn between this being the sort of thing Gurman has been wrong about before and this being pretty obviously true. I know there are some who tried to claim otherwise but without a differentiating factor the Mac Pro really struggles to stand out from its less expensive counterpart, the Studio. Apple would need the fabled Extreme chip or at least some way of vastly improving the IO capabilities of the Ultra without impacting their bottom line for the normal Max/Ultra devices.

Here's what I went with, understanding I could've gone for the M5 but I really want the 16" model and this is roughly the same configuration for my Mac Studio which has been great running all my photo and video editing apps.

I had forgotten how much bigger the 16" is, the build quality also feels a lot cheaper. I think I'll take it back and get the M5 in a 13" instead. I know the touch bar got a bad rap but I really miss that, too.

Oof. God I hated that Touch Bar. I was always accidentally brushing my fingers against it and causing havoc. If only they added haptics. I’m still using my 2016 touchbar MBP as an iTunes server and print server. I had to take it in for a replacement battery last year and the Apple genius was just like “really? You sure you don’t want to replace this?”

Interestingly they also fixed its shitty loose usb-c ports while they had it. They were loose from day one, and since that was my first usb-c device I assumed that was just how they were supposed to be.

Cannot say I relate. Disliked the Touch Bar and absolutely love and prefer 16" MacBook Pro - It is a wonderful laptop in all regard. I also think the GF's 14" is very nice, but I love my 16" :D - Build quality feels basically the same between them IMO; Just bigger on the 16"

Just want to confirm this is what yours looks like? The keyboard is definitely different, louder and doesn't have the same feel. BTW I don't care about the bar anyway now that it's gone, just liked it on my last one.

Yes. In fact I’ve used a lot of them. M1 Max at home M1 Pro at the office. Have used colleagues’ models too ranging from M2 to M5 gen machines in both 14 and 16” sizes. There may be slight differences in keyboard feel and sound but unless they’re side by side and you ask me to focus and spor the difference and give me a couple hours to deep dive every key id never notice

That’s what mine looks like (and mine’s a 16” M1). The keyboard is infinitely better than the butterfly that infected those old MB’s. They don’t self destruct if dust gets in them. I had to get keyboards replaced 3 or 4 times on those old things. The new ones also provide more feedback and key throw, which I like, but to each his own.

Okay, you guys have me think twice about this one. I still have 12 days and I'll give it a little more time.

It's also (barely) possible you got one with build problems. If you can, go to an Apple store and see if the 16s there feel different. If they do you can return it and get another.

The build seems fine, just not as tight as my 13” was. I think it’s just a bigger size than I anticipated and it’ll take some getting used to.

Do any of you guys use your MBP to charge your phones or other USB-C devices? I used to swap out the USB-C power to all the other crap around my laptop (phone, headphones, etc) but this laptop requires its own proprietary power cable.

you should be able to charge the laptop with a regular usb-c cable (though you’ll want one that supports 140W if you want to be sure you can keep it charged under high workloads). The proprietary cable is optional (at least that’s the case on my machine).

And, yes, on occasion I charge my phone or watch or whatnot by plugging it into the usb-c type on the MBP, but not very often. In a pinch.

It’s standard USB and will work with any standards-compliant USB charger. I routinely charge my 16” with a phone charger :) The only caveat is as Cmaier mentioned that you want a high-amp cable for charging under maximal power consumption.

I do that all the time at work, but not really anymore at home. In fact I basically don't use my home laptop anymore, cause of having a desktop and a laptop at the office.

But yeah as others have said, you don't need the MagSafe 3 cable for charging. It has benefits, being MagSafe for one so it's harder to step on the cable and knock the laptop on the floor. It also means you don't use up a USB port. But all the USB-C ports can be used for charging. In fact, the MagSafe 3 connector uses the same system as USB Power Delivery just without any of the data lanes for USB

... which means it is safer to use with random chargers you may find in airports, cars, aircraft, etc.

Awesome, had no idea I could use this for power. Put the magsafe cable in the drawer and am back in business as I was.
