California recall election now has 70 people on the ballot

Received an email from the country informing me the USPS scanned the ballot I mailed in. In some states I believe this type thing would be advertised as "Irregular!" or "Ripe for fraud!". Voters should never be informed that their vote was processed. That type thing should be the exclusive domain of partisan auditors.

Actually I think that is great. Imagine if you got that email and you HADN'T yet voted.

Yep - this is an anti-fraud tool that Democrats support wholeheartedly... something both sides can agree on perhaps? I am not sure where the GOP comes down on this issue, but I’d have to imagine they should be for it.

So while you all are celebrating how secure CA mail-in ballots are:

But I am almost positive he wasn't up to no good with these. :(
So, they found all the missing ballots despite an insane guy robbing a post office for some reason. Looks like they are doing an incredible job. Did you note that he didn’t steal ballots specifically, but just somehow stole a bunch of mail? Probably stole all sorts of important Mail, including paychecks, bills, Court notices, etc.

But sure, some guy robbing the post office is caught, all ballots returned, but somehow… MUH FRAUD!!1!1

Correct, he was caught. But what if he hadn't been? Also, you might want to consider the chance he would have voted them in a way different than how you did, diluting YOUR vote. I guess you are OK with that???????

You really don’t know how vote-by-mail in CA works, do you? Didn’t you just comment on the fact that voters get an email when their ballot is submitted, and can track their ballot online too?

It’s almost as if they thought about security and did something about it in case a bunch of US Mail went missing…

But, but MUH FRAUD!!!1!!!!11

Not a single ballot was tampered with, just dumped in the back of the car along with other purloined mail. I suspect he got all of the mail from a relay box.

Ok, lets look at it from a different angle. Had he not been caught, voters might not have gotten their ballots. Some may have noticed, others may not have. So there is a chance that someone who would have voted had the ballot ended up in their hands, may not have even noticed it didn't who up, because as has been noted, voter apathy on this recall is high.

Also, from the link you posted:

You can sign up at wheresmyballot.sos.ca.gov for alerts by text (SMS), e-mail, or voice call on the status of your vote-by-mail ballot. (Bold and Red added by me)

Which means people like @Chew Toy McCoy who care enough did sign up. But it doesn't seem to be automatic.

More hyperbole about fraud that doesn't exist. Is this what Fox and their ilk are running with now? Man, you guys need to come up with some real conspiracies.

300 ballots unopened ballots were found in possession of someone who had no business with them. Sorry, but that is a problem. Is it a huge problem that could alter the race? No and probably not. But it is still a problem.

No, it really isn't. It's hyperbolic right wing rhetoric where they keep trying to create a problem where one literally doesn't exist.

Just a thought, maybe Republicans can try running on a message that will win voters over instead of constantly trying to suppress those who are voting.

Ok, if this is truly a problem, do you believe all vote-by-Mail should be illegal? How will military members vote? Or don’t we deserve a vote? The mail is quite secure, but it is possible a crook could steal the mail. It’s also possible a crook could break into a voting precinct and steal in-person ballots. Somebody could murder the politician that won the election. These are all possibilities. But there are plenty of safeguards to minimize the risk of any of them happening. Get real.

We’ve had a rash of mailbox thefts in my area over the last year. Our mailbox banks got hit several times in the same month. They upgraded to more industrial grade banks and we haven’t had an issue since. At least in our case it seemed to be an organized operation, almost like a reverse paper route. My roommate actually chased them out of the complex and they hopped in a large new SUV and sped off, obviously not homeless people. Our complex is also gated. So this wasn’t just some random drunks pulling an ill conceived prank as they stumbled by.

I believe mail theft is already a federal crime, but I think ballots being included in the haul should make the penalty substantially harsher. I don’t know if it is. I don’t believe ballots were the target but so what. You don’t get off for murder during a robbery just because you weren’t intending for the gun to fire.

This was about mail theft. The past couple years the USPS have changed out old boxes for newer, more secure boxes because of an increase in mail theft. This particular case doesn't appear to be targeting mail-in ballots. The report you linked states: "Police say they also found multiple California driver's licenses and credit cards in the names of other people." Should we stop issuing Cali driver's licenses and credit cards as well?

It's a shame we will probably never be able to vote online. Even if it is ultra-secure it won't stop the losers from declaring rampant hacking fraud.
Since most people want voter ID anyway, a physical Smart card plus PIN would be a very secure way to vote. Unless you have the card physically connected and you have the correct pin for that card, you cannot authenticate.

Forgot to add: maybe not everybody wants a card reader at home so you can still vote in person or by mail. But online should be an option. We trust online banking with millions of dollars, but you can’t vote online????
