California recall election now has 70 people on the ballot

Since most people want voter ID anyway, a physical Smart card plus PIN would be a very secure way to vote. Unless you have the card physically connected and you have the correct pin for that card, you cannot authenticate.

They’ll just claim some hacking happened between when the vote was submitted and when it got counted.

All I know is the Larry Elder ads are gold. He has the charisma of a wet noodle, comes across as angry and keeps yelling at you from the TV. His behavior is really bizarre but the more people see him the more Democrats will be energized.

Let's hope so. Although I almost... almost want Elder to become Governor in order for the GQP to be permanently banished from California afterwards. Of course he'd possibly cause major damage in the year and change he'd be Guv.

It's funny but not funny, we don't want our hospitals over capacity with a bunch of entitled Conservatives. I think the one saving grace for Newsom is mandates, which are supported by 69% of the people here and that's why we see him doubling down on it.

One question: Who's fault is it the Democrats aren't paying attention? Sounds like a "THEM" problem to me.

I agree with the article. It’s the Democrats’ fault. The biggest flaw of left leaning voters is they need to be romanced into voting while their politicians tend to believe they shouldn’t harass them with motivation to vote.

I also agree with the article that if Newsom loses its bad news for a lot more than California.

That's what we thought would happen to Trump in 2016.

Fair point but at least Trump had followers and name power, this guy has none of that outside of a radio program. IMO the best thing is for more mainstream people hear him for themselves.

The big worry now is that if Newsom loses and Feinstein either resigns or dies, then a GOP Governor could appoint a GOP Senator further wrecking the Dem agenda worse than Manchin and Sinema.

I think we're going to see power shifting back to the Republicans in the midterms anyway so it seems like an unlikely factor, the next year notwithstanding. That's a lot of projecting to be honest.

True, but I also think sticking it to liberals has become an even bigger motivator than supporting Trump. In a way it doesn't need a leader and has already proven it doesn't need a platform. Democrats losing is the only goal.

Republicans do seem to be really focused on the long game because they aren't bringing anything of value to the short game. I would be interested in your opinion on that because you might see things differently.

From the article @Chew Toy McCoy posted:

According to Political Data Inc., which has been crunching the return numbers, nearly 605,000 mail ballots have been collected from Democrats, compared with around 236,000 from Republicans and around 236,000 from voters who belong to minor parties or have "no party preference."
Sending a ballot to everybody looks like a win for democracy.

1. It reminds Dems that they need to vote or else they will get an insane GOP governor.
2. It looks like Republicans are still buying the insane “mail ballots are for wimps” nonsense and many are not mailing in their ballots.

Still, I will say it for the thousandth time: a recall election favors the minority. It is not Democratic (since somebody could win the seat with 2% of the vote) and the process should be eliminated. It’s also wasted over a quarter-BILLION dollars on this one alone.

What is their long game? Seems to me they are only playing the short game. They are trying to make it harder for minorities to vote. As seen by the 2020 census, this will not work for long. It might get them 1 or 2 elections, but if they stick to being the party of white supremacists, they will be dead and buried in a decade. They need to eschew the “white power” crowd and focus on policies popular with everybody regardless of their heritage.

Their long game is backing down on demonizing popular (and needed) legislation and focusing instead on chipping away at voter rights. Once they have control again they’ll laser focus on the failings of the Democrat legislation (all legislation has failings) while continuing to chip away at voting rights. Rinse and repeat.

The big test will be the 2022 elections to see if their voter suppression tactics coupled with Democrats being too lazy to vote while thinking everything is great with a Democrat in the Whitehouse pays off.

In the spirit of "conventional wisdom" I haven't seen anything showing people don't vote because of difficulty level over just not giving enough of a shit to vote. Making it more difficult to vote definitely sounds concerning, but is that really the key issue? How many people from both sides have seen the people voted into office not do shit for them...and I'd argue a lot of those eyeballs black people on Democrats who got elected in the past.

To connect it to Afghanistan, maybe we should start considering the fact that the government we supported was just as shitty as the Taliban but in a different way. There's no clear good guy.

Anyhow, I'm rambling...

Chipping away at voter rights only buys them a decade at best. The demographics are changing too fast. I consider the anti-voting stuff the short game. If they want any political power 20 years from now, they will have to abandon the white supremacist pandering.

I agree they need to cut loose the white supremacist garbage, but I don't see the democrats making much headway on voting rights currently. They're getting applauded way too much for legislation that hasn't actually passed and honestly they have a long history of "Well, we tried."

It's kind of absurd to realize we can't pass voting rights legislation because a party won't vote for it. Where are the founding fathers on that gaping loophole? It's like letting a murderer pick their trial verdict.

The original voting rights act (that the SCOTUS killed) was massively bipartisan. It should not be a Democrat vs Republican issue. Honestly, the fact that Republicans are unrepentantly making it harder for minorities to vote is something the voters will not soon forget. And when today’s minorities are a majority of the population, there’s an entire generation of voters they are handing over to the other party on a silver platter.
