California recall election now has 70 people on the ballot

What is the point of a recall election in California? (I’m lazy today.)
Who knows. Somebody thought it would be a good idea, but these days it seems like every single governor is getting recalled. I think they should get rid of the process entirely... if not, at least increase the number of signatures, or require them to be actual physical signatures on a piece of paper.

At minimum it should at least require another person running to have better (or any) ideas.

If the CEO is tanking the company you don't fire them and then replace them with the most popular janitor.

Yeah, that’s not how our system works. All you need is people to vote for you. And in the case of the CA recall election, if 50% +1 voter decide to recall him, the new governor is replaced by the person who gets the most votes on the ballot. With 46 candidates, you’re looking at the possibility of the new governor being elected by 2% of the total votes. What a garbage system.

This is probably the one example of voting that Republicans think is totally fair.

A very low possibility. Elder is polling at 20%, Pathraff @ 10% and Cox at 6%.

But there shouldn't be a second question. The LT Governor should take over just like if he resigned or died. Right now he is at +1.2%.

Which brings up an interesting scenario. What if his polling plummets and he resigns the day before the recall? What would happen then? Not that I think it would happen, just an interesting scenario.

He forced masks on everyone and closed down all the restaurants, then had a maskless dinner at a restaurant. People got pissed and started a recall petition. Ok, a bit more than that, but that was certainly part of it.

I never thought of that but I can't think of why that wouldn't work 🤷‍♂️ even at this point though, internal polling has him feeling pretty safe according to local news.

One area I will say we can agree on is that these stupid rules around the recall could be changed by Democrats, that much is on them.

I have no issue being able to recall politicians. Keeps them somewhat honest, but I do agree with you and @SuperMatt that it is too easy. Up the number of signatures required and stop with the 2nd question. Just let the LT Governor take over. Worked just fine in NY this week. Unless of course your name is Andrew Cuomo.

Apparently to hurt Dem officials and get in GOP assholes to that couldn't win otherwise. Larry Elder possibly becoming governor of California would be tragic.

If the state keeps the recall option, at least make the threshold to have a recall election and the qualifications to run be much, much higher. Just 12% of the last gubernatorial election count to trigger a recall is insane. Candidates qualifying with just 65-100 signatures and a modest fee is insane.

A better option would be a super majority of voters would have to vote "Yes" on Question 1 (same threshold for impeachment, if California has that option available; 3/5ths or 2/3rds doesn't seem unreasonable). And there should be a reasonable minimum for a winning candidate for a successful recall. Elder winning with ~20% would be insane. 40% or even 50%+1 would be fine. Especially if you don't make it too easy to qualify for Question 2. Maybe 5000 signatures instead of the current 65-100, along with a high enough filing fee ($5000?).

Easier and more effective solution: no recall elections. Cuomo is out of office in NY without one. If a politician becomes unpopular enough, they lose all support and have to step down. Otherwise, vote them out in the next scheduled election.

Well apparently impeachment isn't an option like in NYS. Cuomo would have never stepped down were it not for the likelihood of an impeachment after the AG's report.

Wife told me about an interesting article she read, but couldn't remember where. She is still looking.

But the premise was Californians might be willing to take a chance on a Republican in order to bring some law and order back. And if he really screws it up, he is only there for a year. Kind of makes sense.

Edit: I think I found it on the NYT, but it is behind a paywall. Not sure how she read it or she may have read an article that referenced it.

They can't really claim to be about law and order, given their recent behavior. It's arguably code for over-policing minorities and probably a few other groups. Also, to be clear, we don't need clowns like this guy.

Yes it is.

And unlike the president, the governor is temporarily relieved of their duties after impeachment and before the decision of conviction or acquittal.

Whenever articles of impeachment are presented to the Senate, the officer is temporarily suspended from office and can not act in an official capacity until acquittal. Cal. Gov't Code § 3037. The constitution provides that the Lieutenant Governor acts as Governor during impeachment. Cal. Const. Art. V, § 10. If the official is convicted, the official may be suspended or removed from office and disqualified to hold any office of honor, trust, or profit under the State. Cal. Gov't Code § 3035. An official whether acquitted or convicted, remains subject to criminal punishment. Cal. Const. Art. IV, § 18(b).

The recall election is utter nonsense.

Yeah democracy, if you can squelch the opposition and con enough dummies into thinking you’re the second conning you can prove why democracy run by crooks does not work. The problem is, there are no real safeguards against stupid, a stupid vote = a smart vote.

That’s a basis to not vote for him next time, if you are of a mind, not waste resources with this kInd of a wasteful exercise.

Larry Elder douch bag, con artist, Trump v2, preaching to his dummies. The commission has zero todo with investigating why Dems impeached Trump, it’s to look at how deep the conspiracy went.

He's got all kinds of problems that are all over the news here, everything from brandishing a gun to an ex girlfriend to not disclosing required past businesses, etc. Very Trumpish and dirty, and within a single percentage point of Newsom (when you consider the 50% threshold) with only 20% of the vote. IMO the best motivation for Dems is to watch his ads, he comes across as angry and resentful.

I think Newsom will continue as governor for one simple reason. Ballots were mailed to everybody, and they just need to mail them back.

If people actually had to look up what day the election is, and get out of work and vote, they might think “Newsom isn’t the greatest governor of all time, and how bad could the GOP replacement really be? Forget this.” But with the ease of mailing it in, I think Newsom will get enough votes.

And the early numbers are showing a huge turnout in email ballots, usually good for the Democrat.
