That's what happens when you simply tell people "shut up, you're stupid" and don't allow any legitimate discussion.
To what legitimate discussion are you referring? You mean like when people like Rand Paul, who has no understanding of the medical or biological issues, questioned Anthony Fauci, or maybe doing what America's Frontline Doctors were proposing? Consideration of the pros and cons of vaccination and other measures is always appropriate, especially during a public health crisis, but that doesn't mean buying in to every disproven fringe theory.

I know you aren't anti-vax, but I also believe you favor letting people decide for themselves. Guess what? I do too. I'm required to review the concepts that apply to self-determination in medical care and research annually. But although I don't think people should be forced to be vaccinated against their will, neither should they be permitted to put others at risk by their choice.

But a *legitimate discussion* needs to be had by degreed medical professionals (epidemiologists, virologists, immunologists, etc) with decades of experience. Drs. Larry Brilliant, Anthony Fauci, Deborah Birx, etc come to mind. RFK and conservative talk show talking heads don't cut it.

They want pundits with an opinion to have the same weight as actual specialists who have spent their entire lives studying and practicing in this exact field, and if they don't allow it you're labeled as "woke". It's utterly ridiculous.

If wonder if they'd be OK with having an appendectomy performed by someone (a member of Congress, perhaps) who's only read a lot of books on the subject?

Shooting up bleach or horse tranquilizers is not "legitimate discussion". If you want to have a conversation about it you need to not look like total dipshits.

You kind of made my point.

Just telling people not to take horse dewormer (not tranquilizer) is not discussion. Hell there was one poster on here who refused to even acknowledge it had legitimate human indications.

So instead of just calling people stupid for taking horse dewormer, explain why it doesn't work.

I agree, but the problem was that medical professionals who also had decades of experience but disagreed with the approved narrative were also demonized and deplatformed. Almost like one side was afraid alternative ideas would come out.

In the case of ivermectin, people latched on to anecdotal reports and studies showing in-vitro effects, but clinical studies didn't bear it out as an effective therapy for COVID-19. Understanding why it didn't work was different, as it required a deeper understanding of the drug's mechanism of action and its potential effects on SARS-CoV-2 infection, which is beyond most people. So if someone refused to accept the evidence as explained to them and insisted on taking it, yes they were being stupid. Some families were screaming at healthcare workers to give their dying loved ones ivermectin. Although their behavior was sometimes understandable, that's not how medicine works.

Legitimate disagreement between professionals is always expected and even welcomed, as some accepted dogma may turn out to be wrong. But groups like America's Frontline Doctors were just spouting dangerous misinformation about the pandemic and vaccines. People like them have no place in the conversation.

Curious... do the medical professionals you're referring to have similar achievments/medals/awards that Brilliant (playing a significant role in eradicating smallpox) and Fauci (in dealing with HIV/AIDS, Ebola, Swine Flu and receiving a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George Bush) have?

As I recall, that was, in fact, attempted. Repeatedly. But there is a group of people who have been convinced by a certain leader that the experts are trying to fuck them up, so do not listen to those guys. Seriously, Dr. Fauci should be executed? Come on, man, the problem lies with the anti-communicator, who has been encouraging his people to be proudly, contrarily ignorant.

And it’s this same “brain trust” that is now trying to scare people about “turbo cancer.” 🙄
