But are they going to grow the market?

Some will jump based on price, but there are already a few cheaper EV's from non-Chinese companies for those on a strict budget. So what will a Chinese EV get them?

A lower price, some predicting $25K - $30K for lower end models for people who cannot spend a lot of money for an EV. Depending on who you believe there are somewhere between 300 and 500 EV manufacturers in China - an astonishing number. Let's say 10 to 20 manufacturers (around 5% of 300) end up exporting EVs to the US. I think that would have a major impact on the current EV market, assuming the cars are decent (I think they will be).

Currently BYD, a major Chinese manufacturer (15% EV market share, right behind Tesla in 1st place), is aiming to setup a factory in Mexico. The reason is EV imports from China incur a 25% tariff. Chinese EVs manufactured and imported from Mexico only incur a 2.5% tariff. I think that's going to shake up the US EV market, and could be a factor of Apple not going forward with their EV, and Musk behaving strangely re Tesla, lately).

But... In yesterday's news, it was reported that Biden is pushing for a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs. I don't know if that would also apply to Chinese EVs manufactured in Mexico - perhaps it will be less (doubtful considering the current concern about Chinese EVs)

So who knows how this will shake out. I do think a lot of current EV manufacturers are concerned.

want that shitty cyberedsel look, but not alpha enough to drive a giant car designed to kill you but with insufficient truck bed to haul an adult’s bicycle?

Now you can get that look with your model S or X!

Ack! I’ve been looking at the BMW i4, I miss the ease of tactile controls and sensible menus.

i test drove the i4. I liked it a lot, but it was too small for me. I barely fit in the front seat. I could make it work, but I just wasn’t thrilled with the tradeoffs that come from them not doing a clean sheet design (i think there’s even a transmission hump for some reason, if i am remembering correctly. That said, it was comfortable, drove better than my model s, and the UX is pretty good (carplay!).

How small is small, would you say it's smaller than the Model 3?

the bullshit where they lie about the price, making you flick a little switch to find out the real price, has to stop.

I want that everywhere. If you tell me this thing is $N, that is how much you should give it to me for, not "oh, plus tax and handling and surcharges, and you will need to buy this other thing from us as well if you actually want to use it."

absolutely. but tesla takes it to an extreme. By default, the price they list assume “estimated gas savings” and various government rebates that you may or may not qualify for based on income and other factors. So you see this number in bold type in a big font, and then a little switch with tiny text that says, essentially ”show me the actual price.”. And that’s just the ”sticker price“ - still doesn’t include all those other fees.

You want a billionaire to be ethical about their business practices? This is America buddy.

When they first lost the tax credit they did flip the site to be more honest. It is sad to see they have gone back to hiding the actual out the door pricing by default.

Though I read that the 7500 credit can be applied at vehicle sale now, so that makes things even more muddy right?

Whoa, a WHOLE grocery cart full of stuff? Amazing.

youtube is full of cyber-edsel fail videos, including discussion of this post. I love ‘em. Fingers breaking when the frunk closes on them, body panels falling off while driving, becoming undriveable after the bed is hosed down, etc.

Not that it'll matter because the rich never face actual consequences but still.

Elon Musk accused of selling $7.5 billion of Tesla stock before releasing disappointing sales data that plunged the share price to two-year low

Did you want a stainless steel nightmare of silly angles? Well, good luck with that. You can buy the $100K top-of-the-line model today, but lower-priced models are not obtainable. And reportedly, inventory of what they have is stacking up.
