Macrumors still nuking posts without even so much as a word

15 years ago was about when I first joined the site. Before that, I frequented a somewhat more obscure site called macosrumors, which was pretty strict but fair in its moderation. When I went back to visit it some years later, the forum section seemed like a sort of uncomfortable shithole, full of the "wrong" type of posters (IMHO). I guess most places develop internentropy, becoming not what they used to be.

I was once slapped with a three-day suspension for the crime of choosing the laughing emoji from the "like" button on an article by one of their writers. The message I received from the moderator was that I was begin given a timeout for "harassing" the writer. 🤣

For more than 15 years, I was a regular on the site, visiting and posting several times a week. Now, I check the front page maybe once a week, and I never post.
Yeah, I've been suspended once few years back, don't even remind what I did that was so nefarious
BTW they are basically doing a lot of publicity to stuff I don't care that much but I understand they need to survive.
In their forum there are still few very good tech people helping when you have an issue 💗

Seems like the latest thing Arn has deemed to be acceptable behavior by MacRumors members is fat-shaming. The recent story about Jony Ive (and previous articles featuring him as well) is filled with comments about his weight and appearance. That's apparently A-OK with the former physician and his team of "moderators."

MR is lost.

The political stuff has broken their brains on how/what/when to moderate and how.

They frequently post topics (like TikTok ownership change to conglomerate of unsavory groups) where the entire topic is going to essentially require commentary from political angles, yet they start going crazy banning posts/people that say anything even hinting at those things.

They only allow such comments if they happen to agree with them. Fun place.

haha! I'm detecting the sarcasm! 😂

A few of us have, on the side, speculated that the posts that clearly should be in Political area are maybe "honeypots" to give cover for banning people they don't like. It's happened to me in the past.

The net effect is just chilling any conversation down to comments like: "this is great! I'm so excited!"

😐

Oh, delightful.
I've realized I got banned from a comment in the TikTok ownership thread I was just mentioning above, for saying this:

Basically, taking all the things we don’t like about the Chinese having blackbox control, and then giving it to local oligarchs plus some in the Middle East.

I have no idea how MR moderators expect folks to talk about the TikTok ownership change without it being in someway political.

Politics is why the ownership change is happening, full stop.

We've long missed your voice over there @Cmaier , on technical topics in particular. 🙏
Their loss is our gain, even though he was well liked/respected over there they let their petty ass ridiculous micromanagement rules supercede all the contributions he made. Not even an attempt to talk behind this scenes, even a quick message to say "hey can we talk about what's going on" or anything, just stoic banning and arbitrary hand slapping depending on who they like that day.

That exact crap is going to be the death of that place.
I don't know why they think it's good policy to just suspend/ban and have zero dialogue about anything.

They actually banned you for that? Or rather did they put you in suspension, meaning you can post again in a few days?

It was a suspension, sorry wrong term, you are correct.
They ended up reversing them all (it wasn't just me) as I guess the MR blogger or whatever meant to put the post into the "political" area, where it should have been for sure.

Some end up permanent as well but most are allowed back. Some of the time people just don't return which is common on most message boards.

Every time they do another capricious suspension, it drives me further away.
Their black box approach to it all is exceptionally maddening.

In the last couple years, the other issue is that they have some MAGA Mods that have let that bias really creep into what they allow vs moderate away.
