Pluribus (with spoilers)

I don’t think we know enough about the downsides yet, apart from Carol’s and probably Manousos’ objections about the loss of individuality.

I wonder what that alone would do to human creativity. Although it might seem that a hive mind would be better at problem solving, it might be the opposite. What is it like to be tuned into collective consciousness all the time? Might that suppress the individual insights that have led to remarkable progress throughout history?

I also try to imagine how people react to things they don’t like about others, whether it’s the way they look, their voice, or something else. Superficial for sure, but does that really no longer happen?

Then there are the practical questions. How will they survive without a constant supply of HDP? And will humans be able to do everything needed to keep the world running? For example, what determines who is appointed to do the tough, dangerous jobs?
I see Carol and Manousos as a cancer in an otherwise healthy system, albeit with a much shorter natural lifespan and while starvation is a terrible way to go there are definitely worse ways.

Of course you wouldn't have much of a show without them so I see the need. Go team hive, if they can assimilate Carol and Manousos it will be a win win. 🤞

As for the actual progress of the show, it wouldn't be unthinkable that such an advanced alien virus wouldn't deliberately leave some uninfected to help them to overcome their obvious shortcomings.

They haven't touched on procreation. At this point, the hive is a race to a population of zero. Perhaps they'll decide that the correct number of humans is 37 and that will be the level they'll maintain as everyone drops off due to natural causes.

Will they even have sex or will the new members be conceived via artificial insemination?

Manousos being that pig-headed drives me nuts. You have an obligation to the species to try to save it....risking your life on hazardous terrain due to your pride is ridiculous.

Something that has remained consistent with me and all Gilligan shows, I'm never exactly excited about watching the next episode, often put it off, but usually enjoy the episode after watching it. I can't quite figure out why that is, possibly because some episodes or character arcs can be a real slog, like some characters I really don't want to spend a lot of time with.

It's like one bitter cynic just wasn't enough so they doubleed down with him, so far only the infected (for lack of a better word) are the only ones with any sort of redeemable qualities. Not sure if that's the intention of the show but surely I'm not the only one and I don't mind it from this perspective at all TBH.

I think how weary most are in the US with the political climate may make the hive option very desirable. :)

Yeah but it's not like MAGA where they're all aligned with Naizis. This is a happy cult where everyone is treated equally, like I mentioned earlier it is truly peace on earth.

Maybe they are. Maybe they aren’t. Things are rarely what they seem in Gilligan shows.

I still think we just had a hint that the hive mind, while it has the memories of the individuals in it, is being controlled by an alien force and isn’t really the embodiment of unified humanity.

I think he needs to do a better job of flipping the script on us, I really don't mind empathising with them though. I mean arguably Carol knowingly killed millions even after knowing her tantrums would do it, she's the real villain in this story. :ROFLMAO:

You’re describing the plot of “I am Legend” (the book, not the horrible movie that completely changed the ending).

Wait, wasn’t that about a bunch of undead infected/zombies who killed everything? (Agreed that the movie was terrible). Pluribus has a happy hord, instead of murdering you in the worst possible ways they want to feed you and cater to your every whim.

In the book, turns out the zombies were happy and justifiably angry that the human character kept killing them for no reason.

This guy gets it.

They were vampires.

The whole idea is that the human, the "regular" person, was the stuff of legend, the story that (vampire) parents told their children to scare them.

It's all about perspective.

Richard Matheson was genius. Other notable films (but not all) that used his material as source:

A Stir of Echoes
What Dreams May Come
The Legend of Hell House
The Incredible Shrinking Man

And the terrific TOS EP:

The Enemy Within

If I were in the same situation as Diabaté, I’d probably do the same, at least for a while. But it’s unclear where the hive will draw the line in honoring requests.

Although they still mostly do what Carol asks, maybe the tepid Gatorade was the first indication that they’re reaching a limit, especially since they don’t like her.

I wonder if her collapse into Zosia’s arms will be a turning point or just a brief interlude.

The gatorade thing may have just been logistics. How far away are the Others from her, how long is the drone flight, etc.

As for the Zosia thing, I don’t think it reflects any sudden appreciation of the Hive. Pretty clear that she’s going insane with loneliness and will take any contact she can get, an issue that might well be resolved when Manousos appears.

It seems to me that the Gatorade incident was more than just an example of logistical issues, though they would certainly exist. I’m thinking that in Gilligan’s shows, seemingly minor events turn out to be consequential.

I agree that Carol’s hugging Zosia didn’t reflect a change in her attitude toward the Hive, but it’s probably an emotional realization that she’ll have to accept the Others into her life, at least in a limited way.

Carol meeting Manousos should be interesting for sure.

In the spinoff series (codename “Gatorade”) about the Gatorade drone operator, we will finally learn the truth :)

Great idea. I wouldn’t put it past them. The actual series title will be “Better Call Zosia.”

Honestly, it would be wonderful if we could see Bob Odenkirk in Pluribus at some point in its run.

Would be worth the invasive procedure for me, I'm all team Borg in this thing. So what if you've only got 11 years left, look at how happy and unified they are. I mean it's the only true way to have "peace on earth", why is anyone fighting it?
Just think what it would mean for you. There’d be no need for this board because everyone would know what everyone else was thinking without posting. But your drone business would expand if you started to do deliveries. 😀

Which speaks to their patience, which must be that of a saint and even ingratiates them more IMO. Any normal person would've smacked her upside the head with it.
