Quitting has risen particularly sharply in industries that are mostly made up of in-person service jobs, such as restaurants, hotels, and retail, and factories where people work in close proximity. That suggests that at least some people quitting are doing so out of fear of COVID-19 and may be leaving the workforce.

Goldman estimates that most of those people in their prime working years will return to work in the coming months, but that would still leave a much smaller workforce than before the pandemic. That could leave employers facing labor shortages for months or even years.

Businesses in other countries are facing similar challenges, leading to pay gains and higher inflation in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom.

Yet the US Congress with its "so much winning" fetish for only the most hyperpartisan of legislative gains, cannot get it together to pass immigration reform and improve paths out of the shadows for guest workers and for the law abiding undocumented who have been here for decades, worked, paid taxes, have American-born adult children, even grandchildren. Yet the US Congress with its "so much winning" fetish for only the most hyperpartisan of legislative gains, cannot get it together to pass immigration reform and improve paths out of the shadows for guest workers and for the law abiding undocumented who have been here for decades, worked, paid taxes, have American-born adult children, even grandchildren. Because Trump won on a platform of “The Wall” and stealing immigrants’ children, I think Republicans don’t want to do anything except punish immigrants. Otherwise, they figure Trump will support somebody else in their local primary. Even Democrats don’t want to stick their necks out on this issue because they fear losing a seat to a “build the wall” Republican.

America still has a LOT of xenophobia. Funny thing is - most white people who work with immigrants will tell you that they are hard workers and they like them personally. But then they go out and vote for Trump and his wall to keep out "Mexican rapists." Once again, they assume the couple immigrants they personally know are nice, but the rest are leeches or something. Look at people flipping out when the Biden Administration was going to settle lawsuits for migrants who had their kids stolen by the US Government! Even 2nd-generation immigrants will attack new immigrants. And this isn’t just a problem with America. Europe is just as bad, if not worse.

When will people realize that welcoming migrants could actually help the economy and add something new and vibrant to the culture of their country?

Back from the immigration sidebar: It will be interesting to see how many people are able to start successful new businesses in the next few years.

The Democrats need to get real about substantive financial and legal support for small businesses, support that actually helps sustain those businesses past startup and into the longer term.

The Rs talk a good game but their admiration of small business tends to run to how great it is that vertical integrators, corporate M&A groups and venture capitalists still find smaller companies to contract with, or to buy out and load up with debt they can write off to shelter revenue from taxation. The vertical integrators of American big biz also abuse "small business" federal support because they so tightly control the output of the smaller companies qualifying for that assistance. The poultry industry, for example...

Arkansas lawmakers oppose a rule that would hurt Big Poultry. They all receive campaign contributions from the companies affected.

The poultry industry has funneled at least $580,000 into Arkansas congressional campaigns over the last few years.

This might up the time table a bit, but automated labor is destined to happen eventually. It's an issue we'll need to face now rather than later, since it's going to undercut a lot of jobs.

I think a lot of this stems from completely fabricated scarcity propaganda, meaning if somebody else is going to get something then they have to take something away from you to balance it out. So while they may like immigrants on a personal level, they think the only way they can stay here is if they lose something. You can't have that because we gave it to an immigrant who shouldn't even be here.

It's really interesting how the pandemic has made some major impacts on society that are going to stick. The death of office culture and the shift to remote work. Now there's a realization that a lot of jobs give shit compensation for the work done and a lot of people are fed up and quitting.
