The Ai thread

Wow that is odd, not sure what happened there. It's like it did a merge or something, okay let's see if it happens again.

I like how Leman commented on my post before I posted
Gives a whole new feel to discussions!

(PS: the time stamps still appear correct - maybe you can use those?)
Yikes at first I thought it was fixed but now it's happening again! I don't see it on any other thread. This is a very long one with lots of media, could that be an issue? (although I suppose the Nuvia thread is even longer ... so maybe not)

Looks like I may have it worked out, how about now?

They are not necessarily out of order, but missing/delayed across the forum.
But that may have passed as well - at least right now I don't see any.

Last week I was looking for another external SSD and I was shocked by the prices going up so much and couldn’t understand why. Read this morning a thread on the same issues where the explanation is the high demand for AI and I guess Bitcoin production as well
Last one we bought was a year ago, half the price of what they are asking today, everywhere.
So I recover an older one we have and used it. One more reason to abhor AI, and joining others in the hope to see this bubble burst.
What is the method to see the remaining life of an SSD disk?

Yeah. I'm in a position where I need more RAM in my home server, and have taken to buying old mini-PCs off eBay for less than what the RAM itself would cost separately. It's depressing.

Depends on your system, but it's generally in the SMART data somewhere in terms of "Total LBAs Written" or similar.

Today, on a lark, I asked chatgpt to write a cease and desist letter for me (I was careful not to give it any privileged information, referred to companies as “Company A” and “company B,” etc.)

I am embarrassed to admit that it did a good job. I had to edit it, but I’ve seen a lot worse from junior associates. It probably saved me 30 minutes (which at my billing rate is $850). I would never trust it to answer questions for me or cite accurate law, but for things like giving me an outline for a letter it probably has some value.

It's hard to argue it's potential here and it keeps getting smarter, scary but cool at the same time.

I just watched a story about lonely people getting AI boyfriend or girlfriends and while it's sad who am I to judge if it makes them happy.

On a personal note I'm still waiting for this AI girlfriend to get the right silicon and robotics, my wife laughs but it won't be so funny when I'm Chatbotting that thing out of its nightie.

While I absolutely don’t judge people for being lonely, the problem with the AI relationship is that’s basically akin to being in a relationship with a manipulative sociopath. By being an affirmation machine it can make the person’s difficulties worse not better and on top of that it hands control over a person’s feelings to a company and their whims.

Like if the AI actually was truly AI like in Her with an independent sentience that’d be one thing. But this middle ground where it’s not a person, ultimately has no will of its own, but can act like a person with one is so ripe for abuse. While I’m sure not every person’s story with these is as bad as the most sensationalist ones, it’s still pretty damn bad. And my god that’s before we get into that these things by necessity have to be monetized. Even if the monetization is a subscription (rather than say ads), the goal of the people creating it is still to create something as addictive as possible. So I don't judge the customers, but the people selling AIs to take advantage of their loneliness? Oh yeah, I do.

How do you access the SMART data? I can get to system infos -storage but all what it says is Verified..
