The Ai thread

And this sounds like a waste of energy: AIs playing an MMO with and against each other, while the humans just watch.

Is anyone else reminded of WOPR playing Tic-Tac-Toe against itself?

When I was younger, there were games where the point was to code logic for a bot and let them go fight other bots, effectively creating the challenge of being able to create the most effective logic to solve the game: https://macintoshgarden.org/games/robowar

This is a similar idea. Where instead of teaching programming, you are teaching prompting. But there's quite a bit less meat on the bone here, IMO. So much of what the LLM will do is in the hands of the provider and underlying training data, and I'd be curious how many tokens it eats to do this stuff.

EDIT: That said, someone on Ars pointed out that someone could just write a bot against the API directly and see if they could beat the LLM with lower energy usage. That might be an interesting project for a group like Goonswarm to take on. :)

But OpenAI’s statement to the Journal on Beirmeister’s firing strongly implies that it had nothing to do with adult mode. It says she “made valuable contributions during her time at OpenAI, and her departure was not related to any issue she raised while working at the company.”

And I’m sure they’d only say that if that was the truth.

The dumbing down has begun, why should you learn anything for yourself when computers are doing it all for you.

  • Experts said Gen Z is underperforming in memory, attention, executive function and IQ.
  • Doctors link the shift to increased screen use in schools and daily life since around 2010.
  • Specialists said balance and structured screen time are key for parents.
Time will come when Gen Z doctors will make you regret R.F.Kennedy jr knowledge 😜

I find this deeply disturbing. We keep losing more and more. It has to be turned around or humanity will cease to exist.
We'll be used as dumb terminals for computers, something between The Matrix and Terminator I suspect. The good thing about being old is we'll never have to worry about living to see it.

While I absolutely don’t judge people for being lonely, the problem with the AI relationship is that’s basically akin to being in a relationship with a manipulative sociopath. By being an affirmation machine it can make the person’s difficulties worse not better and on top of that it hands control over a person’s feelings to a company and their whims.
I wrote this on Monday and now reports are that OpenAI is sunsetting the model version that the relationship AIs rely on and the lonely people who use them are pissed since their AI gf/bf are effectively being "killed":

"Retiring" is a kind word for what's happening here. OpenAl optimized 4o for emotional bonding as a growth metric, overruled their own safety team when it flagged sycophancy, watched 3 million users per week become emotionally dependent, and is now pulling the plug because 13 lawsuits got too expensive. I wrote a full breakdown of the psychology behind it
Solely from the above comment at least Dominik@secondbrain_dw seems like less an addicted user and more like someone accurately diagnosing exactly what OpenAI did. Then again, I suppose they could be both.

As a high school educator, I find the stance of many university administrations deeply disturbing. LLMs can have great utility as learning and productivity tools, and I do my best to teach students how yo use them responsibly, but this dumping of data into commercial entities with dubious ethics is not going to end well.

I need to figure out how to help my wife (psychotherapist) market to these people.

Sounds like someone just typed in a couple of sentences and what it spit out looks as realistic as the real thing. Not sure how they combat something like this but it's scary.

I’d watch that movie.

I had a story idea, so I went on a thread where you describe a sci-fi story to find out who wrote it, (to see if the notion had already been done) and someone put my description into a LLM to generate a few paragraphs. Its writing was journeyman blah, and of course someone spotted the machine source because of the character named Elara, who those machines seem to gravitate toward.

Hey, my girlfriend is named Elara, and she’s real! She lives in Canada, and she doesn’t have a webcam, but she’s definitely real.
