USA Election 2024

And so accelerates our downfall. Jesus may be American but capitalism isn't. It will just find a new home center to suck dry and then move on to the next. What’s for lunch?

If things predictably and long warned about go sideways Trump voters need to take ownership. “Well, if Democrats didn’t…..” No. You voted for this. This is on you.

As a USA Today opinion piece put it, it's time to stop saying "This isn't who we are." or "We are better than this." By majority vote this is who we are and we aren't better.

Yesterday we didn’t want to watch the news, I turned off all notifications but this morning I received a text
I can’t believe it 😭
I’m hurting, I’m so sorry for all of you good Americans and the world which is going to bear what this could bring
But don’t despair, there are stil many more that could put a stick in the gears and derail their plans

It’s up to republicans to prove us wrong. Trump made inroads with Latinos. Democrat turnout was stunted. The polls were not wrong, they just tilted in Trump’s favor. They were also not very helpful (as is usually the case).

I think Harris did amazing. We can and should dissect what happened and what we need to do moving forward - thats how elections should be handled, win or lose. She did the absolute best she could with a huge burden to carry. She did great. This is America, and it was always going to require optimism to believe this country was ready to elect a black woman. Some will scoff at that being issue and insist it was her and her policies. But this is America, and the posts and hate on social media speak for themselves.

Trump can make his cases go away. I don’t think it’s for nothing, you don’t always hit a home run. We’ve never had a president do what Trump did. The law protected him. I hope republicans and democrats figure this out together. And while my bluster on the election was totally wrong, I’ve not yet been proven wrong that threats of violence also effect republicans.

Trump is vindictive, and that’s not limited to democrats. I promise you many republicans are nervous right now.

Like I said, it may seem like succumbing, but it’s in their hands and I hope they prove me wrong. Prove to us democrats were being drama queens. I’d love nothing more than to be proven wrong.

I also know that despite a third of republicans having a cult-like devotion to Trump, most are just republicans. Please stick around Herdfan, legit - it would be ironic if our lone conservative friend kept us sane on here. 😁

I’m almost relieved Trump won, as the victory parties have switched back and forth. So democracy is not dead yet. Let’s continue to fix things, wish the other side well and call them the hell out when they’re wrong. I’m glad to have the election behind us, and hopefully the election fraud BS dies down. Flags don’t vote, rallies don’t vote, memes don’t vote - voters vote.

If there’s any consolation, turnout was stunted. That’s both a warning to democrats but also proof that low-turnout = republicans win. It’s that simple.
I wish I could muster even some hope or optimism, but I can't. Not today.

@Herdfan was right about Harris, but not because of her inability to articulate a plan. She did as well as could be expected under the circumstances. She lost because the country was not about to elect a woman of color and because the electorate was constantly hammered about how bad the economy is and the need to round up millions of immigrants, arguments to the contrary notwithstanding. Had Biden announced he wouldn't run for a second term back in 2021, the process of choosing a Democrat candidate would have been more conventional. Perhaps a white male – not Newsom – would have gotten the nomination and would have had a better chance than Harris did. We'll never know.

Here's some of what I expect from the Trump/Vance administration:
  • Everyone convicted for their actions on January 6, 2021 will be pardoned, and they'll be out for revenge, aided by the likes of Steve Bannon and Michael Flynn.
  • The government will track donations to Democrats and will keep an eye on social media. Higher profile people will be targeted first by the IRS and other agencies.
  • Jack Smith will be fired by Trump's AG, and all the Federal cases will disappear.
  • The U.S. will pull out of NATO and we will align with Russia and China. As a consequence, Taiwan and Ukraine will fall.
  • Trump will give Netanyahu the green light to cleanse Gaza and the West Bank. This will be messy, as the terrorist organizations and the states that sponsor them claim to support the Palestinians.
  • A nationwide abortion ban will eventually be passed, overriding protections in states that have them.
  • The ACA will be repealed and not replaced, throwing millions off healthcare and flooding hospital emergency facilities.
  • As the FDA, CDC, and other federal agencies charged with protecting public health are tampered with, our ability to mount a response to the next pandemic will fall precipitously. As vaccination rates decline, we will see a resurgence of diseases like measles and polio.
  • The pace of climate change will begin to accelerate as mitigation efforts are reversed.
As I write this, the DJIA is up almost 1,200 points. Good for my portfolio, but I don't see it as a sign of confidence in how the broader economy will fare under Trump.

America deserves Trump. we are a stupid nation, and we need to get our asses kicked to stop being so stupid. Do you have any suggestions on how soon Vace will take over?
You are not stupid but you have a lot of ignorant people and yes a good share of stupidity or blindness because to vote for them can’t be anything else. And there are too many billionaires who like the status quo and promoted this. 😔
In Europe during the toughest times my grand parents and parents endured there was the Resistance, many times just very subtle but so important! And in the end democracy came back stronger

We’re just going to go totally apolitical as much as possible. No news, shut down social accounts like Twitter, might leave various other forums/Discord servers, or at least avoid servers with a public channel that allows for political content. We already do our own thing anyway, have years of our life already planned that won't really change. We’ve got plenty of resources, we could even easily get totally out of here (i.e., the US) if needed.

I don't want to sound like we're giving up - however, we have a 16 year old daughter who's amazing, that's our priority. Just know that we will continue to fight, even if I'm not here talking about it. Definitely not going to play the "what if" game, the reality is what we got, and where we are today.

We (personally) spent 1000s of dollars to assist this campaign, 100s of hours of our time, and if I'm reading things correctly this morning, there was 20M fewer votes than 2020. Not pointing fingers - and certainly they're not the only people who abstained - but I will just mention that Ruwa Romman pleaded with people to vote, and then go through the process to improve the situation in Gaza through channels that can be engaged with. Good luck with this administration.

Trump is probably 18-24 months out from being cognitively inviable for the job (assuming his physical health doesn't get him first), so I’m pretty confident we’re going to wind up with President Vance this term. I mean the whole Vance, Peter Thiel, Musk technocracy thing was setup from the start.

Unfortunate about Amendment 3 (the "weed bill") here in Florida (aka, Flori-duh), but that won’t really affect me (if you know what I mean) but with a required 60% to pass, I was touch worried about that, and certainly more concerned about the Amendment 4 (abortion rights) which also did not pass.

As for the people who did decide to vote for him, I have a special fuck you to offer, no congrats, no "Let's hang out now", no "Now we can heal the nation", you've broken it for decades. So many of those voters will still be doing terrible, the guy in his shitty truck without AC but lots of stickers, who spent his last money for merch instead of dental work, feels victorious. Great enjoy your shitty life.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly hope this new administration does well, jobs grow, we don't get pulled into any long term global conflicts, they actually listen to experts when the next pandemic hits. I never wish my country to suffer because someone has an R by their name. If the economy soars, and our assets grow even more, such that we can have even more flexibility in terms of being able to GTFO, great.

I think Herdfan was right in that some people just vote with their wallet. We’d like to think more voters weigh things, but a lot of people just aren’t interested in any news or politics (and who can blame them) and were just as willing to toss him out as they were to re-elect him.

I'm sorry but the economic anxiety angle is as bullshit today as it was in 2016. I know the punditocracy was filled last night with the economic anxiety talk, but it's bullshit.

Everything else is white noise to them, for better and for worse. Perhaps this win will cause republicans to sit back and enjoy their victory, and cool off. I think Trump can choose to further erode faith in our institutions, but he may want to back off if he wants his two victories seen as legitimate (which they were, but so was 2020).

Yeah cause that's totally how Trump and the Republicans have behaved before. I mean what?

This doesn't mean we give up hope, but we do have to actually deal with the reality before us and not the comfortable lies we tell ourselves.

I've kept my social accounts politics free for years so at least there will be no impact there, other than trimming my follow list of those who gloat which is a win win for me because I like to keep that low anyway. This site is really the only place I ever engage in this discussion anyway, I'm bummed but at least it hasn't ruined my online experience.

IMO we let 2016 happen all over again, everyone reading the rise of Kamala in the polls with all the positive energy and hope flowing, only to watch CNN say "we are stunned that Trump is doing so well" almost word for word like they did in 2016. We learn nothing from our past mistakes, that can be said for both sides.

Yep, just look at the stock market today. I know that the stock market isn't the "economy", but I do view it as myopic barometer.

It's not gonna last. I expect it'll last about a year, but then the tariffs, massive cuts to government programs, mounting debt from the coming tax cuts (and the costs we'll be sinking rounding up, detaining, and deporting 11,000,000 people), plus worldwide instability due to Russian and now North Korean interference will put a damper on the economy pretty quicklike.

Trump was lucky last time. None of the crap he pulled had any short term effects on an otherwise healthy market. He doesn't have that buffer this go-round. The world has mostly recovered from the pandemic, but we're all still on uneven footing. We don't need any big shake ups to rock the boat.

...and we just elected a massive shake up.

One of the biggest mistakes has been made by the media who didn’t learn from 2016 and kept writing, talking about rump without discrediting him or them as they should have done
but ready to condemn only the democrats for every thing they slightly did wrong: not a fair game
So much free publicity used for , alas, the wrong side.

Peaceful Resistance

I had a couple of crap-post accounts that I deleted. I decided to have one social page and one forum account after the election, regardless of outcome. The extraneous crap is gone. I was hoping this show would end but we are in for another four year season, or more depending on what happens.

Facebook is still decent because you can unfollow people but remain friends, and can manually check in on them without seeing their posts randomly. You can also tailor your feed, already I’m seeing virtually no political posts. Twitter removed that ability and the algorithms don’t work. Or they “work” as intended by not working. Either way, it was good while it lasted but Harris or Trump, I was out after the election.

I was a skeptic the entire time because of this, my posts here over the last month will show that.

A side note, I would be for getting all your vaccines before these crazy fuckers ban them. We're going this week.

Also, let me just say... You shouldn't have to stand line for hours to vote. That is one thing the Republicans successfully accomplished over the past decade. Consolidating polling locations, restrict funding and technology to make the voting process more streamline.

I’m sick at heart. This slide downward has been building momentum for 40 years. And now 4 more years to finish what dedicatedly began in 2016, the dismantling of the world’s most powerful democratic republic, with the desired conversion into an empire of darkness.

Whether they realized it or not, the majority actually chanted “Death to America” and got their way. May they suffer for their poor choices. May the rest of us hold on and fight back. That’s the best I can come up with on this darkest day of our lives. 😓

My theory is part of the ‘It’s The Economy Stupid’, a huge number who might be considered former/struggling disenfranchised Middle Class, not happy with their economy, who don’t feel Dems have provided, want to give it away to the ‘wrong people’, and are willing to blow up the system via the Incompetant Fascist in the hopes that after the dust settles, their financial situation will be improved. And they have not bothered to consider or don’t care about likely loss of civil liberties as a consequence, because they’ll be on the ‘right’ side.🤔

All of this is propelled by racism, xenophobia, white privilege, disinformation, foreign interference, the huge failure of MSM controlled by billionaires, and the ridiculous view that if you entrust your lives to a habitual liar, con man you’ll experience a better outcome. 😔

Went to bed at 2:30 AM, and had already seen the writing on the wall, especially when the call came in for Pennsylvania. As I turned out the light I was experiencing a nightmare even though I hadn't actually yet gone to sleep. I am angry, I am sad, I am frustrated and I feel a very deep loss for the hopeful future this country could have had.

To all the Arab Americans and college students who couldn’t hold their nose and vote for Harris over Gaza, good luck on that with Trump. Muslims were the first on his hit list in his first term and his so called Middle East peace deal centered largely on getting those countries to forget about the Palestinians. I’m sure Isreal will accomplish great things in 4 years with the support and blessing of Trump. I guess the right can’t have all the dumbest shortsighted voters.

Well, they won by a decisive amount so I think we need to let democracy play out, we demanded it for our side too. Also, congratulations to @Herdfan who has taken his fair share of shit on this site and he's not here rubbing it in our face right now when he has every right to.

We have two years to get our act together for the midterms, onward.
