What Movie Are You Watching?

Training Day is spectacular, I love the Equalizer films too, they're such a totally different vibe, they're borderline superhero movies - they're a great trilogy too, with a satisfying conclusion that manages to be pretty introspective (re: your Equalizer 3 review above).

Equalizer films, Training Day, all directed by Antoine Fuqua, if you want another of his films that's really gritty like Training Day - and also stars Ethan Hawke (again), check out Brooklyn's Finest (2009).
The director has a real talent for story telling. This character is exactly like a super hero, due to his ability, to tactically, mentally plan a deadly physical assault on multiple adversaries in a close encounter. Yes, it borders on impossible, but the genius of this is executing it in such alway that it does not break your suspension of disbelief. He’s like a killer ghost in plain sight, yet as we see in E3, he’s vulnerable if he let’s his sympathy interfere in his judgement. :)

National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978)- favorite! ☺️

…always wanted this Vet.

I don't normally post in here but had to call out the movie Sinners, this seriously has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen, and I don't say that lightly.

It's bizarre but in the best ways, the acting was excellent and the musical scenes (which I didn't even see coming and typically can't stand in movies) gave me chills to watch because they were so powerful and well filmed. This whole thing is a masterpiece IMO.

.

Haven’t watched it yet, but now that the last Mission Impossible film is out we will be watching it and the one before it.

The original was great, but then they went downhill. I did see Fallout which kind of made me want to see these last 2.

And the music is spectacular!

I pre-ordered this as soon as it dropped (won't ship till September)

Sold out in like 10 days. They'll likely do a standard re-release and it's still available on CD, and of course streaming, etc., we've just got back into vinyl some time ago, and love these sorts of limited release versions.

Just finished Mickey 17. Mediocre scifi, but damning indictment of Donald trump done by Marc Ruffalo.

Captain America: Brave New World (2025)- Hmm. I have to think about if I like this. I think there’s some acclimation going on in the post Infinity Stone Saga era. The plot is ok, not great.
  • The new Widow- as in Black Widow, she’s ok.
  • Captain America- I like Sam Wilson as the New Captain America. However I question, he gets stabbed and takes a knife to the shoulder like it’s not much of anything. We know he’s not been enhanced as Falcon because he complains about how he should have taken it
  • New Falcon- I like him.
  • President Ross a one off or the New Hulk? He’s too old to be the New Hulk. Maybe Edward Norton or Liv Tyler. 😉 References are made to the 2008 Incredible Hulk.
  • Samuel Sterns- A radio personality as a villain? 😉 I like Tim Blake Nelson but he was a bit to mad and enough humor as compared to typical roles.
  • What’s this mass that rises out of the ocean? Looks like like a head and a hand made of Adamantium. Oh, it’s a Celestial. https://screenrant.com/mcu-celestial-island-treaty-adamantium-origin-explained/ Eternals reference…I did not like and can’t remember if I even finished this. 🤔

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)- The Battle of Helms Deep, the Exorcism of King Theodin, and the Ent’s assault on Saruman. Epic! ☺️

Wait for the words!

Trivia: The settlement representing the Capital of Rohan was built on Mount Sunday, then disassembled after filming.

I’ll probably watch the newest one when I can rent it. But, yeah, they’ve gone downhill. The most recent movie was disappointing.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)
It’s infrequent finding this kind of EPICNESS on the big screen. Lighting of the beacons, the retreat and charge on Osgiliath, Sam fights Shelob, Gandalf whoops buttock, orcs and an uppity Steward, Spiritual uplifting “No Pippin, death is not the end”, Sam storming the tower single handedly to save Frodo, The Battle of Pelennor Fields, Eowyn and Pippin ROCK. “You fool, no man can kill me.” “GUESS WHAT SUCKER!…” (paraphrased ☺️), and OMG, one of the most incredible cinematic scenes in movie history is Legolas- King of the Oliphaunt spankers. And the climax of the movie, when a very unlikely character becomes the inadvertent (very loose interpretation) hero. This story has everything, so many memorable moments including bromance and intense romance. 😁 And it devotes 15 minutes to closure, very much appreciated.

Note: For be being a White Wizard Gandalf was a bit short of fire out of fingertips, if you know what I mean, but that’s ok. 😉

Rebel Ridge (2024 Netflix)- 5/5 Incredibly good story about a black USArmy veteran riding into police corruption in a U.S. Southern town. Not your typical action film, and not based on a specific true story, but is based on real cases of police corruption. I spent the entire film wondering how is this man going to survive this with his life intact? 🤔

Plane (Netflix 2023)- On a flight from Singapore to Tokyo, an airliner in forced down onto an island where the Captain tries to protect his passengers from local insurgents. Energetic, but…I think they forgot an aviation consultant…

IMG_3630.jpeg

I like both these actors!
Read after the movie or get a taste now, hard core spoilers.
  • Along their route they hit storms storms, they hit severe turbulence, the captain is concerned and on a two pilot aircraft, he leaves the flight deck and goes back to check on the crew and passengers. Post 911, as far as I know that just doesn’t happens.
  • Lightening strikes are possible, losing your avionics is possible, but I’ve never heard, “electronics are down, radio is dead, we’re on straight battery, (with the engines still running) , We have 10 minutes before power goes completely dead, and then an uncontrolled descent. The gens are on the engines, they’d likely put out juice. The engines would not stop running if the battery went dead. There are circuit breakers on aircraft not fuses. Ok, there could be a fuse, but a 40 amp fuse? I think it would be a CB. It’s not a scenario I ever saw, which doesn’t mean anything really, just mentioning it. I’ve not heard of a situation as described in this movie- 10 min for the battery, then we lose control. On an A320 you could lose all electric and still fly the aircraft with minimal control, but you still had enough to fly, but because the throttles are fly by wire, if all the gens died, to leave you on battery power, you would have a short time frame to land before losing the ability to control them, but more than 10 min. Could be with newer aircraft, this is a possibility, but all aircraft designs are based on heavy duplication of critical items. They have static ports specifically designed to carry any electrical strike energy off the airplane, and there are multiple generators usually on the engines unlikely to be damaged by a lightning strike, but it’s been 15 years since I’ve flown so don’t take this as gospel. Onward
  • They have 10 min to get on the ground. In 10 minutes at 40k (mentioned later) you could do an emergency descent but that’s about it. Normally if the engines are running you keep flying until you are close to running out of fuel. But under the premise as described, lose control of aircraft when battery dies, the pilot is preparing to ditch, good move, but he then sees land and flies inland, into the jungle at night, no lights anywhere, bad move. Much better to ditch than try to set it down in the freaking jungle. But there’s a road and they land the plane.
  • The investigators trying to figure out what happened to the airplane, want to know why this captain was demoted to flying “crappy” routes. They watch the video on a flight of the captain being punched in the face by an out of control passenger, and he responds by subduing the passenger, like that’s wrong?? 🤔
  • The captain actually finds a phone in a warehouse and calls his company, and the woman he talks to, doesn’t believe he’s the captain because they’ve been getting prank calls. She wants to know his badge number and he tells her sorry I don’t have it on me. When I flew, it would be your employee ID number and everybody had that memorized. 😳
  • They get help from a mercenary team sent by their company, because the Philippine government is too scared to send troops to the island because of the insurgency. Somehow the electronics are fixed, via a fuse and they gonna fly out?
  • The Captain gets shot in the leg from an assault rifle, no problem, he’s not in shock, not bleeding to death, he’s gonna fly them out. And during the escape the aircraft takes a lot of bullets from automatic assault rifles. No problem.
  • They want him to climb to 3000’ but he says he can’t cause the doors are open. They tell him he must! He say no! No problem. Maybe if he had limited power after one engine failed, but there is like 20 people on board, and he says it’s light on fuel., Damn it, that plane should climb! They are rated to fly around on one engine, maybe cause of all the bullets, and the near 3000’ mountains decided to give him safe passage… 😛
  • Ok, I won’t tell you the ending… 😁

We got our tickets for July 11th (a nice mid-day time to avoid some of the crowds) for Superman. Our fave seats in theater #8 :D The Cinemark at Durbin is a fantastic theater, reserve seats, huge recliners, full bar, great draft selection, even "real" food (though we usually just do popcorn andhit South Kitchen on the way home).

The Mummy (1999) - Outstanding entertainment, good story, besides plagues and death, a humor quotient for good ole family entertainment! My grandson loved this as a kid. 😊

The Mummy Returns (2001)- excellent sequel! @obeygiant I agree with you, gorgeous and young. :D
…unlike the Tom Cruise 2017 abomination.
