Chasing a cable car - this is not photoshopped, it's shot using a long exposure while matching the speed of the cable car as closely as possible using a ND1000 filter, everything else naturally blurs with the 1 second exposure. It takes several attempts to get just right.

First male of the year able to get to the nectar
Just came across a hilarious bird article in the NYT:

The issue must have "tormented" the ornithologists for a long time - certain birds have incredibly extravagant feathers to attract mates (of course).

You would think that there is evolutionary strategy competition between wanting to maximally stand out and to not get eaten, right?

So on top of that, some scientists just had to find out if these massive ornaments could actually measurably decrease survival by seriously impeding the birds field of vision.

So they developed a contraption to measure the field of vision (since it's hard to get the birds to push the button when they see the light....) and compared males and females of the same species.

And indeed, males of some species had significant visual field defects, particularly looking up, which is not ideal when you spend most of your time pecking at the ground...

Bottom line, one has to assume that attracting mates is a stronger selector than avoiding predation - I guess after the deed is done, your genes propagate and evolution doesn't care if you get eaten faster after that.

Food for thought, so to speak.
