The Trump Indictment Thread

Such great supporters! Nobody has ever had supporters as great as mine! Maga!

Penis-shaped balloons with pictures of prosecutors leading cases against Trump float outside courthouse
Penis-shaped balloons with photos of District Attorney Alvin Bragg and others are floating over lower Manhattan. Some of the balloons, which are filled with helium, have a picture of Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the hush money trial against Donald Trump taking place nearby. Others feature a picture of prosecutors, such as special counsel Jack Smith, who brought charges against Trump in different criminal cases.

I kind of get it, I'm all for a juvenile joke as much as the next guy.

I'm ok with floating wanker balloons, lets keep it at that, shall we? No more threatening to hang the VP and using violence to break into the Capitol or courthouses. No picking brainwashed cultists who voluntarily die by suicide by cop as martyrs. Let's stick with penis balloons.

Prosecution has completed their redirect. After 16 hours of grilling, Michael Cohen is golden-brown. The prosecution has rested its case. The defenestrata defense has called two witnesses, in an effort to make Cohen look unreliable. The first one was quick. The second, one Bob Costello, has been a total shitshow, practically begging the judge to send him up for contempt. At one point, judge Merchan cleared the entire courtroom to have a moment of tea and crumpets with Costello – who should know better, as he himself is a lawyer.

costello helped the jury believe cohen. i heard the judge actually cleared the jury 3 times to deal with his shenanigans.

The jury has to see Costello as a prosecution witness. How another shady, corrupt lawyer waltzing into court and making a scene to capitulate to Trump is the same as what Cohen has testified to, its the same thing Trump's otherwise probably competent lawyers have had to do, its what the speaker of the house and members of congress have done - This is like a witness on the stand saying they did these things to keep their legs from getting broken, and there's Trump over there holding a bat and tapping it in his hands.

One theory is that defense did not want to call Costello, but Individual-ONE insisted on it. It appears that his legal team are taking direction from him, no matter how ill-advised. But, Costello did provide a possible strategic advantage to them: his spectacle may have been enough for the team to convince their client not to testify.

Defense has rested its case. Tomorrow, the judge and legal teams will confer on the jury instructions. Then, everybody breaks until Tuesday, when closing statements are delivered and very possibly the jury retires to deliberate. The judge delayed closing statements until after Memorial Day, to be certain that none of the jury got stuck in the woods or something over the long weekend.

I doubt if that made a difference, since the very stable genius would never say or do anything on the witness stand that could harm his case the way Costello did. But just like the gag orders have had some effect on Trump's conduct, so too has repeatedly hearing his lawyers' advice not to testify.

Seeing those GOP morons show up in "Trump attire" at the court had me reflecting that now it's more important than ever that T gets to spend some time in the hole:
How fitting it would be if that gang had to show up in orange jumpsuits to show solidarity!

I’m open to the possibility that Cannon isn’t completely in the pocket of Trump but instead is nauseatingly contrarian like the rest of MAGA. She’s the flat earther of the justice system.

She's a rookie judge with no real experience, at least of this magnitude. In over her head - but she did have an R next to her name and is relatively young, the two main requirements for nominations.

The whole system is either afraid of or in the pocket of Trump, even if they don't think they are. They'll overthrow 50 years of precedents at state and federal levels, but god forbid we stop a criminal on his warpath from committing more crimes.

I have no doubt Trump broke the law with his congressional allies to circumvent his gag order, and the system just doesn't have the time or resources to haul his ass to Rikers, where he has belonged many times over.

Of course. There should also have been a red carpet rolled out for Trump on his way into court each day, the thermostat set to 75 degrees and his coinpurse caressed with the delicacy of a flower.

What we can’t be having any of, is this criminal grifter facing remotely anywhere near the consequences you, I or anyone else would.

Would truly be bad judgement for the judge to treat all defendants equally. That’s how democracy ends, by not propping up the rich and powerful.

I think it’s bad judgement to give him twenty chances. Or fifty, or whatever he’s up to now. For the party who’s all about tossing people’s asses in jail and cheering on the death penalty, they sure do look like big fat hypocrites with this criminal nimrod utterly controlling the minds of his gullible followers.

Throw him in Riker’s for a week. Not because he is or isn’t a former president, but because it’s literally what the judge would do if this was any other defendant.

I love how you cherry pick a line and then narrate a whole point of view based on things I never said or implied.

First of all, the gag order on Trump is questionable at first. There’s some who argue they’re inherently unconstitutional, I’m not sure that’s true, but it does seem they should be used only when absolutely necessary. The ACLU previously sided with Trump in regards to a gag or order in the Jan 6 federal case.

In this “hush money” case I can understand why the judge might want a gag order. But it’s not like Trump won’t make his opinions known through his surrogates and supporters in the media. At the very least it seems inappropriate for Judge not to gag the other parties involved (ie Cohen, Daniels).

In some sense frankly, gagging Trump probably most benefits Trump. His mouth is his own worst enemy, as we know.

Throwing Trump in jail over his asinine statements disproportionally escalates the situation with his base and draws more unwanted attention (attention of the wrong kind). I don’t think Trump would mind a weekend at Rikers, he would play into just as he has every other situation that for any other political would be catastrophic. It gives even more credence to his claims of unfair treatment- whether that’s true or false is irrelevant because it will only energize his base further.

I’m 100% on board with holding criminal politicians accountable. But clearly elites benefit from a separate set of rules and always have. Top Politicians are rarely treated the same as an average person. Govt Officials represent the govt and should be held to a hire standard if you ask me. Yet it’s pretty unlikely we’ll ever see such justice. Politicians generally get to live above the law in our country.

Though I wonder if we are heading towards a country with a corrupt legal system, misused to persecute political enemies. This case’s may be one of them, the basis IMO is super flimsy. If convicted I suspect it’ll be overturned and I think the prosecutor ion and judge know that. A standing conviction had never been the goal.

That’s not to say Trump doesn’t have legitimate cases, very serious in nature. I’ve long believed Trump is likely guilty of crimes related to election interference/fraud. I’ve also long believed Trump’s election denial and rhetoric incited 1/6 and intentionally allowed it to proceed- not sure if this is a crime per se but it should be considered disqualifying.

Ultimately I believe justice will likely be properly served in the cases where that deserve it. That is unless Trump is re-elected which seems increasingly more likely.

Just to be clear, it’s not just him. I’m pretty sure most of us interpret what you write the same way. Since this is merely a public forum, you might want to follow the old KISS principle, and leave no room for interpretation.

I'm going to cherry-pick another line - this one.

You can "understand" why the judge would put in a gag order, but Trump is going to disregard it anyways and.... so what?

I don't need to dissect your post with a scalpel because this is the theme that runs throughout them - Everyone should really understand Trump is one of a kind and should just deal with it.

Nope, sorry, **** that.. That's special pleading. Don't care.

The both-sides stuff has got to stop. I'm ok criticizing democrats and often do so myself - the issue with Menendez still being in the senate, for instance. But that would be akin to the Santos situation - not as a security blanket to compare dems to Trump or the BS stunts republicans are pulling. There is no "political prosecution" of Trump or his allies, and by your own admission you think Trump committed crimes, yet your defense against prosecuting him is a vague "its flimsy". Some cases are stronger and easier to prove than others, this isn't malicious prosecution. Have you read any transcripts or watched the news? He didn't just write her a check out of his campaign coffers, it was a web of crime and tax evasion, and I could just as easily argue that the prosecution withheld charges to NOT appear to be overly aggressive.

How much stuff are we supposed to let this criminal grifter get away with before he faces ANY REPURCUSSIONS AT ALL?

If Trump gets a second term I’m going to give myself a day to be disgusted with a disturbing amount of voters and then I’m going to tune out, which I acknowledge is a key goal of fascists, make a good percentage of the population go “Fine. Do what you want. Just leave me alone.” I’ve never considered myself an activist and it’s not my job to live in a constant state of irritation and fear. I won’t be on the initial target lists. Best of luck to those who are.

Short of a little bitching here and there on this site I've already tuned out, the political strife right now is off the charts and it's just not worth engaging in. All you can do is ignore and tune out as the insane right imposes their will on the citizens of this country.

I'm still hopeful come election day.

But I won't be the least bit surprised if trump is elected. Learned that lesson eight years ago in combination with recent polling (multiple polling organizations, multiple points in time, multiple sampling methodologies) leading to a statistical tie (a coin toss).
