What are you doing today?

Absolutely. I'd also highly recommend spending some time in Kanazawa.
Next time I will, thanks for the tip. Kyoto was amazing . We had the chance to be there at the end of November and the trees were so beautiful!
Asakusa is the place where there is the Buddhist temple of Senso-ji? So big and incredible too!

The bigger question I've got for myself at the moment is that I don't have a passport, and so no idea how getting one is going to play out with the shutdown happening. But as long as I can get it issued by spring I should be okay.

You should be good. But you can go ahead and get the pics done (you can actually take them yourself, you just need to make sure the size of the face matches the requirements).

Also, the Post Office is still operating so you may be able to get it submitted even though it might sit at the Passport office until the shutdown ends.

There are also services that can expedite it by walking it through each step. But not cheap.

I also recommend going ahead and getting a Passport Card. Won’t work for you going to Japan, but good for Canada & Mexico and we use them to fly vs a DL (mine is Federal, wife’s is not).

For your amusement, this I shot yesterday

Yes, that is a Tesla, at the gas pump. But,
We had the BF Windstorm. We were out and about, to get breakfast, because the house was dark. Traffic sucked the big one because everyone else also had our problem. Would I guess, the guy in the Tesla has a gas-powered generator at home.

Yes, the large temple in Asakusa is Senso-ji. Definitely a must-see for visitors.
