What are you doing today?

Got home today after a fabulous visit to Nashville. Here were my two favorite parts.

Did y'all know there was a copy of the Parthenon in Nashville? This is the statue of Athena. It's enormous.

Then there was this.

This chonky gopher has taken up residence in my cousin's back yard. First time I'd ever seen a live one up close.

I hadn't really wanted to share my doom and gloom news. But I got laid off a couple months back. Last Wednesday I had my first interview in over 20 years. I honestly thought I did so-so.

I just got news that I got the job and will start December 1st. So I guess I did better than I thought. And I now have a full month to actually enjoy not working. Between job hunting and trying to get my skills current, I feel like I've been working about 60-80 hours a week. So I'm looking forward to getting a nice vacation!

So "What I'm doing today (tomorrow)" will be finding out about my new job.

Thank goodness!

I’m not like you, though - if I get laid off, I will definitely come here to share doom and gloom.

Just watching the news on and suddenly saw the ad I worked on 6 months ago, first time seeing my footage on TV.

Here is the ad, most of the aerials are mine. https://www.sftravel.com/believe-san-francisco

I know the video is all about SF itself, but watching it sure makes me homesick for the Bay Area — even though it's been more than 30 years since I lived there. 🥲

Wow congratulations, had no idea but glad it worked out.

May be unrelated but we're looking at a new revolution with AI and seeing this so much across the board now.

You are incredibly lucky! You must also be incredibly good at what you do, considering all the (now former) federal workers you're competing against. My daughter has been out of work for about two months now. I can only assume her dads are supporting her. She won't even discuss the situation with me.

Eric... Curious, does your drone camera have enough resolution (and lack of vibration) so that largish sized prints can be made from individual frames?

That depends, a still capture from a video is different than an actual photo. Anecdotally speaking I would say a still capture (not photograph) would be able to get a decent 8x10 print but you will surely see degradation the larger you go. As for actual photos, it has a 100MP main camera that uses a quad-bayer format, and its telephoto cameras have 48MP and 50MP resolutions and the quality is exceptional IMO, you could probably upsize these to as big as you like.

Thanx for the heads-up.

Ever think about making a book of interesting overhead SF stills? Perhaps starting/testing with MagCloud (I've used them a lot for my book projects) making some book-dummies, and then if that looks promising with potential, a professionally made hard-bound book.

I did and even published something and so far (double checks numbers) it's had zero sales. :) It just never really came to pass but here are the rough drafts.

Nice! IMO... there's another step that needs to be made. And that's publicity.

When my Tenderloin USA book project partner and I were ready to release it (after two years of making photos in the TL - day and night), we hit up the San Francisco Chronicle for a meeting to talk about the book, and snagged a meeting with the Datebook editor. She liked what she saw and the back story about our project. She then assigned a reporter to meet with us at a Tenderloin restaurant for an interview a week later. After eating the reporter followed us around in the TL hitting up strangers for some conversation and portraits.

What surprised the crap out of us, that story, with photos, was the front page story of the Datebook section of the Chronicle, along with an online version of the story and a few photos. That generated a huge about of publicity and resulting book sales - the proceeds of which we donated to to a SF charity that helps wayward kids from all over the US ending up in the TL with shelter, food, job skills, etc.

Perhaps a something like the above could work for you assuming you keep it San Francisco focused.
