What Movie Are You Watching?

If you want a clear understanding of just how different the same story can be told watch The Long Hot Summer 1958 vs 1985. No competition imo. :)

The Eiger Sanction (1975)- I really liked this book and thought I liked the movie, and it was ok this time, but I think I was spoiled by Dr Jones over Dr, Hemlock. :)

That film is a strange little gem. I think I watched it in 1990 under the influence of heavy drugs. Someone else had it on; I was transfixed by it and it burned a hole in my brain. Goofy plot with some great lines. Cool climbing footage for the time.

It’s been called the best depiction of mountain climbing ever filmed. I suggest if you like this story, read Shibumi by the same author.

Eagle Eye (2008)- I saw this when it came out, but had forgotten what it was about, and this time had a difficult time going with the premise until it was evident this is a near future science fiction story. Then I was ok with it. :)

Godzilla Minus One. It lived up to the hype for me. As Godzilla films go, this is the most “realistic and serious” one I can remember. I’m thinking it’s the best one ever made.

Hombre (1967)- One of the best Westerns on my list of good Westerns. All star cast, tough and gritty, Paul Newman is great. John Russell, white boy kidnapped by the Apache, learned important life lessons he uses in this story among some thieving white folk.

Operation Petticoat (1959)- Loved this as a kid, watched it this afternoon, and the image on our large screen TV was horrid. It’s possible they are streaming a VHS version, definitely not remastered. :( WWII story semi-comedic about the adventures of sub crew and a pink submarine, well before The Beatles Yellow Submarine. :)

Must not have been because some of those old films look great when converted to HD.

We got our first HDTV in 2001 and HDNet played a lot of Hogan’s Heroes reruns and they were stunning.

If anyone’s looking for a Thanksgiving film, Home For the Holidays, directed by Jodie Foster, starring Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr, is a wildly underrated movie. Unusually paced with a darkish, family-relations realistic tone. Holly Hunter in her prime and way before RDJ hit the MCU. Funny as fuck.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017)- I’ve recently come around to this version, even though it’s not as good as the 1995 version, but at least I can tolerate it now. :) The original 1995 movie takes place in this world, while 2017 takes place in the game world, “in the jungle you will wait” (?), and is technically a sequel as references to Alan Parrish, the character from the original movie are made.

Harvey (1950)- A charming story about a pleasant man (Jimmy Stewart) who has a friend, a large invisible white rabbit, that he keeps company with, that mostly he sees, but others do too on occasion. The story is brilliantly told. I felt emotional when:
Stewart’s older sister has a panic attack, because she realizes she does not want him to be changed by a drug injection at an insane asylum.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)- It’s ok. A sequel is planned for 2026.

The Green Mile (1999)- Amazing mystical story telling, a Stephen King Masterpiece. This movie touches me emotionally. There are some horrible scenes to watch in this story, but there is at least one miraculous occurrence that makes up for it.

Red One - 2024

Ok, I thought it was an entertaining movie. But the first half I felt like someone had slipped me acid. Just a bit out there. Normally I rate movies by am I upset I paid $X to go see it. Well it was my first movie in California and for the three of us movie and snacks (2 popcorn, 2 candy, cheese sticks and mac-n-cheese bites and a drink) were $140. Dayum!

So in that case, probably not. But in my world where it would cost half that, I would not be upset. ;)
