Will Kevin McCarthy become Speaker?

Any clue / bets how this will get resolved? I have to admit it's been pretty wild to watch unfold.

Well I was only half joking in saying that the clown car caboose might choose to let Jeffries become the Speaker.

They're hell bent on destroying the establishment GOP, so why wait for another election (when the far right will lose even more seats with antics like this). The time for them to strike with maximum embarrassment potential to the traditional conservatives is now, while there are still enough of them to threaten effectiveness of their own conference during regular House business.

They'll probably attempt to oust whichever unlucky Republican manages to take the gavel as one of what will probably be a serial number of House speakers in the 118th Congress. And of course they'd try to oust the Dem Hakeem Jeffries after "accidentally" elevating him while trying to defeat McCarthy at the outset of the term.

I would love when Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio is done yammering for McCarthy, someone does the same for Jeffries.

ETA: Yay. Got my wish.

Maggie Astor, NYT commentary, Jan. 4, 2023, 1:57 p.m

"More than two dozen right-wing figures released an open letter [and an appeal for donations] today urging more Republicans to oppose McCarthy. Among them are former Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina; Ginni Thomas, the wife of the Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas; and Cleta Mitchell, a lawyer who helped lead efforts to overturn the 2020 election."
Good ol' Ginni. Pretty sure she's not headed to jail over 1/6 insurrection support. Money talks, the rest gawk or go to the slam.

Amazing how the elite supporters of the insurrection are still skating, including around half the GOP House conference.

According to some betting sites, McCarthy's odds of becoming Speaker rose this morning, but I think that was before he lost the latest round.

Someone has to get to 218, and each time McCarthy is nominated, Jeffries is closer. Which I mention because republicans have made overtures to not just the 20 holdouts, but some subtle comments urging democrats to do the same and get on board with McCarthy "for the good of the country". Lol. But if we need to get on board with the consensus candidate of the whole body... that's Jeffries right now!

In that case the betting sites got it right, like they usually do.

Fifth ballot: total stalemate. No movement for/against McCarthy. Still 21 non-McCarthy R votes.

Do they vote again today? I don't think it will change much, but who will they get for the 20 votes? I think Donalds was indicating he'd rather not be the "Plan B" if this continues.

The next plan (my guess), would be for McCarthy to step aside for another candidate. But I doubt that is happening anytime soon no matter how ridiculous he and the GOP look right now.

Fred Upton said he's willing to be a "consensus candidate", and could probably win if it came to that, but I don't see it. I can't see anyone outside of the house republicans being speaker. I guess the question is how long do they let the circus go on.
