Will Kevin McCarthy become Speaker?

It’s a shame the Dems aren’t underhanded enough to pass some legislation right now, while they literally have a majority because they’ve all been sworn in, while the R’s can’t even swear in their members so that they can be appointed to committees and vote on something other than their own leader!

Actually they can't do that because the prior Congress was gaveled out of existence minutes before the new one was gaveled in. Right now there literally is no operative House of Representatives because their first order of business has to be selection of a Speaker. Then the dean of the new Congress swears in the Speaker and then the Speaker swears in the House.

Maybe they can position this as a win since their #1 goal is to make government not work.

On that note, getting thrown out of office could also be considered a win by their standards because that just proves they successfully got nothing done and voters decided we possibly shouldn’t be paying people to do nothing. They’re basically governmental welfare queens.

It just seems that way.

As for Jordan, I think he would not take any crap from anyone. I can't think the Dems want him in charge of the Judiciary. So if I were a Dem, I would vote for Jordan just to keep him from running the committee that is going to run some investigations.

If I were a Dem I'd be hoping for a coalition, although it's not clear to me how the stipulation that the House have a speaker can be got around. The Rs are clearly two parties now anyway (at least in the House), with the tail of the HFC wagging the GOP dog for years already.... and now that conference is even further fractured by the tail of the HFC trying to derail democracy itself. 18 of the 20 holdouts against McCarthy are election deniers... which is not to say there aren't over a hundred more in the regular GOP aisle.

True though that the prospect of Jordan running the House Judiciary Committee feels like a travesty. It will be only marginally better for the country if he has that post than to be Speaker.

Per commentary in the Washington Post this morning, the Rs may be intending to just try to adjourn immediately after today's noon session comes to order. Sounds like they didn't get very far overnight in devising a path to electing a Speaker. Dems are being counseled to vote against immediate adjournment.

They should've stuck around longer yesterday. You could see tensions running high as democrats seemed to chill and keep their cool.

McCarthy is still spouting confidence this morning. One thing is for sure, McCarthy needs to win or his congressional career is probably over. And whichever side blinks first is going to look weak - the hard-right will again have caused a scene, or McCarthy and the rank and file will look defeated by a group of clowns.

Should be interesting to see how today's votes go. I don't think McCarthy can win without some clever math of getting some members to vote present, unless the freedom caucus folks cave. Doesn't seem likely.

Andy BIggs and Matt Gaetz have both called McCarthy a "sqautter" yesterday and this morning for being in the Speaker's office. Gaetz is disagreeing with Trump. Boebert doesn't seem moved... Should be interesting.

*Trump's endorsement this morning doesn't seem to have swayed Gaetz....

The Speaker holds a high-profile position and has great influence on how the House's business is conducted, not to mention being second in line to succeed the President. Jordan isn't qualified for that job or to be chair of an important committee, but would portably do less harm in the latter role.

Seems to me Democrats and reasonable Republicans and Independents would greatly prefer someone who actually cares about governing.

No adjournment to start. Probably didn't have the votes from the freedom caucus, which forced another round of votes. Democrats have made it official they will not help McCarthy win by holding votes or leaving, at least today.

McCarthy is not going to be speaker without people leaving. He will have to dig in or relent. It's easy to say "I'm not giving up", but that gets harder each time he loses.

So far, every round of votes has been a PR win for democrats.

*Fourth round, and McCarthy humiliated again. Oy.

Jordon must have convinced the anti-McCarthy gang to nominate somebody other than himself

And with 8 votes against McCarthy already, he's unlikely to get the 218 needed if everyone votes

I think Jordan wants the Judiciary Chair more than Speaker. And if he bucks McCarthy and McCarthy ends up winning, he may lose that.

Glad someone got a screenshot because the first time someone guns down a bunch of people in the chamber this will be surely be deleted.
Who is to say it won't be one of the fringe Representatives? Not that far of a stretch from Gosar's anime showing the killing of AOC...

He's clearly been opposing the anti-McCarthy gang efforts and you're probably right that he'd lose the Judiciary chair if he didn't

McCarthy lost a vote in the fourth round. A member voted present instead of for McCarthy.

Hell, Jeffries needs to flip fewer republicans than McCarthy!
Wonder if that is a McCarthy tatic/threat. Who would get the blame if the Jeffries won Speaker?

"Every vote that happens without my winning, I will have someone vote present. Your move."

Right after a vote to censure the despicable Ms. Boebert. Expulsion too much to hope for...

... unless of course the GOP accidentally or on purpose allows Jeffries to end up the speaker. A tossup whether fringe freedom caucus malice or overall Republican incompetence would more suit that occasion.

You'd almost feel bad for McCarthy, but he was on the phone with Trump last night, probably begging for support. If he didn't beg, then Trump will say he did anyways, probably when McCarthy loses his dream, and resigns his seat, THEN he will - all of a sudden and amazingly - find a backbone to stand up to Trump, to which Trump will respond "When loser Kevin McCarthy came to Mar-A-Lago to BEG for my support....."

Too little, too late. He's learned nothing. He calls Trump, then makes sure he lets the press know Trump still has his back (because Trump would not truly fight for him). What happens? McCarthy loses another vote and gets beat a fourth time, garnering less votes than the minority party he worked so hard to defeat.
