Will Kevin McCarthy become Speaker?

I know Kevin McCarthy probably didn’t imagine “his moment” shaping up like this.

Here’s the guy he worked so hard to placate…

Imagine being Kevin McCarthy and having kissed Trump's behind (after initially practically cursing him out while under attack in the Capitol on 1/6) and now hearing Trump's all too predictable "well we'll see how it all works out" when asked if he's still all in for McCarthy being speaker.

Trump has his own issues. I mean how many former presidents have ever thrown a "media availability" hour out there and had zero cable outlets show up. McCarthy deserves whatever he ends up with at the hands of his peers in the House when he's spent so much time courting both Trump and the MAGA crowd of reps in that chamber.

So far looks like all Kevin McCarthy has managed to collect is scorn from the MAGAts and what looks to be shaping up as a slide under the bus from the grimy peddler of NFTs not even as nice looking as baseball cards. Oh, and a possible big fat IOU for "Gym" Jordan if the latter can manage to secure the votes to give McCarthy a gavel to wave around for a few weeks or months before "something happens"; and he's ousted.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jordan end up with the gavel before spring, but "not right now" since he's trying to fend off both Stefanik and Scalise by being super loyal to McCarthy.

Here's Trump's take on today... notice he says NOTHING about McCarthy. He is having a fun day today, you can bet your ass on that.

Bingo!! Gym Jordan is angling for the gavel. I wouldn't put it past him that he'll stab anyone in his way. Scalise and Stefanik will forever be linked to McCarthy. That's why I don't understand they're not doing all they can to get him the gavel. They're toast if he's pushed to the side.

Stefanik gave some kind of bombastic pro-McCarthy speech before the voting started and probably figures that's enough. Maybe she came up too fast to realize the knives are really out for McCarthy's seconds too, not just for him.

Scalise, yeah I don't get where he's coming from unless he's working hard behind the scenes. He clearly needed to work harder and faster.

I start liking the idea of a coalition-run House better and better. Never gonna happen but I'm taking that thought to bed with me tonight so I can sleep.

Matt Gaetz is trying to get McCarthy evicted from the Speaker's office.

These guys, wow. They all deserve each other even as they scrap like dogs and a badger.

no coalition probably, but maybe a deal to screw the Gang of 20?

what would McCarthy give in return if Jeffries would have just enough of the democrats to vote "present" to create a majority for McCarthy?

Meanwhile, the metal detectors installed after Jan. 6 are now being removed from the Capitol as an emblem of this Republican-led Congress’ ambitions, which includes things like seeking more information about perennial boogeyman Hunter Biden’s laptop, writes @prem_thakker.

Hot packing Boebert must be thrilled.

Kevin McCarthy is still groveling to Trump. McCarthy said Trump reiterated his support last night, even though Trump wouldn’t do so when outright asked by NBC.

Trump today finally reiterated his support, though it may be too late.

What makes you think that anyone here wants to have McCarthy as the speaker?
But the other question is, why do you want Jim Jordan as the speaker, when he cannot even remember if or when he spoke to Trump on January 6th?

It just seems that way.

As for Jordan, I think he would not take any crap from anyone. I can't think the Dems want him in charge of the Judiciary. So if I were a Dem, I would vote for Jordan just to keep him from running the committee that is going to run some investigations.

Republicans can do better, there must be some that aren't totally corrupt.

There was a twitter video of her gloating as they wheeled it away.

This is the 3rd time in a row that being the Republican Congressional cat wrangler is the worst job in Washington, worse than running Twitter with Elon Musk as your copilot. Just actually wanting the job should disqualify you and you should be committed to 2 months of serious mental health observation.

It’s a shame the Dems aren’t underhanded enough to pass some legislation right now, while they literally have a majority because they’ve all been sworn in, while the R’s can’t even swear in their members so that they can be appointed to committees and vote on something other than their own leader!

Per commentary in the Washington Post this morning, the Rs may be intending to just try to adjourn immediately after today's noon session comes to order. Sounds like they didn't get very far overnight in devising a path to electing a Speaker. Dems are being counseled to vote against immediate adjournment.

Democratic leaders are urging the rank-and-file to stay united. Amid rumblings that Republicans will try to adjourn when the House convenes at noon, leaders told Democrats during a closed-door meeting Wednesday morning not to help the GOP. They told caucus members to vote against such a motion, forcing Republicans to solve their problems.
