Robert Scoble says apple is coming out with a new search engine. Not clear if it will be accessible as a stand-alone website or only via siri, but he claims it is replacing what Siri is currently doing for search.

Another search engine! Not sure what to say. Most of the 3rd party search engines are just a re-bagged Bing (DDG, etc). If Apple keeps it truly private, I'll be using it. One reason why I use DDG.

I'm perfectly happy with Google and don't use Siri for anything so if the new one is based on Siri, I'll just ignore it.

Sounds like the reversed. The search engine wouldn’t be based on Siri - Siri would be modified to use the new search engine (for answering search-related queries)

Hasn't this rumor been circulating for a few years already? I remember this came up a few times in the past that Apple might be creating their own search engine.

Yeah, in various forms. And we have seen that, in the last couple of years, Siri answers more queries based on its own data rather than just pointing at google results. But it sounds like what the rumor is Is that all that is getting ripped out and replaced with something new.
