I suppose the writing was on the wall when Ian left and gave the reason for leaving as the lack of money to hire anyone to replace Andrei putting too much load on Ian. Gavin was already working there and was now covering too many jobs. Just not enough money to do the job they wanted to. End of an era in tech journalism.
It has, but I feel this was inevitable since the day Anand departed in order to join Apple's silicon design team. It just took a while.
The people who kept AT running after he left should be praised for trying to maintain what he created, but they never fully replaced his combination of writing ability, technical analysis, and engineering background. (He didn't start out with much of the last part, because he was a teenager IIRC, but got a degree while still running the site.)
