Representative-elect George Santos' completely fabricated past and qualifications

Wow, Tulsi Gabbard ripped him a new one when she filled in for the horrible Tucker Carlson. You really don’t see anyone on Fox, even the supposed “fair” people, grill anyone on their team like that, certainly not very often.

He’s not really owning up to it. He should be called on by everyone to resign. He’s painting it as simply puffing up his resume, and justifying them as exaggerations instead of outright lies. If I told you I went to the moon and used touching a moon rock as justification, it’s still a fucking lie.

I heard Santos claim he's not a fraud. I'd send the guy a dictionary, but he should have something left over from the $700k.

I’m failing to think of a disqualifier for a Republican candidate or office holder. At this point we’ve pretty much zipped past rape and I’m sure murder isn’t far behind because, you know, “justified”. The overall reason for Republican voters burying their head in the sand is “Democrats are worse!” followed by a bunch of general and vague perception complaints or at best sighting isolated events like they are an epidemic. But I also don’t know what their other options would be on the right. Our country is imploding on so many fronts.

Some are even questioning his voting: did he also commit voter fraud? He says he lives in his sister's house. But he reportedly voted based on his previous address. And now the County D.A. is looking into possible crimes and charges against Lyin' George

"The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated with Congressman-Elect Santos are nothing short of stunning. The residents of Nassau County and other parts of the third district must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress," Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said in a statement regarding her fellow Republican on Wednesday. "No one is above the law and if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”

I wonder how much sympathy you can get by claiming to be gay though, especially running as a Republican.
If he is indeed lying about this (which I am not saying he is but rather it’s worth questioning given since he has lied so much, everything must be questioned at this point), I would assume he thought identifying as gay would favor him politically.

Perhaps he believed the opposition might be less critical of him if he can claim to be part of a minority group, or it might make him more appealing to non-republicans, or it could be used to ingratiate himself among the conservatives who can point to him and say “see, he’s gay and a Republican”- an “Uncle Tom” so to speak.

This is also NY, which is a very different climate of Republican than say the Deep South. There isn’t the same level of at least fever of homophobia in Republican voters in the Northeast tend. They tend to be far more socially liberal/libertarian than other parts of the country.

He seems to have lied when he said he lived in Long Island, lied when he said he was not a convicted criminal, lied when he said he was a jew, lied when he said his grandmother was a jew who converted, lied about ukrainian heritage, lied when he said he was openly gay, lied when he said he is married to a man, lied when he said he graduated Baruch college, lied when he said he attended NYU, lied when he said he worked for Goldman Sachs, lied when he said he worked for Citibank, lied when he said he owns a lot of real estate, lied about the source of his income, lied about the supposed company he created, lied about having four employees die at the Pulse nightclub shooting, lied when he said he wasn’t evicted, lied about Belgian heritage, lied about having a charity and lied about what the charity accomplished, lied about the source of funds he loaned his campaign…

He‘s gotta be Trump’s running mate, right?

Update:

and he lied about attending Horace Mann Prep, and he lied about being forced out when his family was low on money, he never attended SALT as a panelist, and he never berated his employer from the stage for investing in renewables (and he lied about it even being his employer in the first place), he lied about his family name being Zabrovsky, he lied about the charity that he lied about being a 501(c)(3), he lied about having a ”white Caucasian mother, …”

No opposition research at all by anyone. Where was the press? Isn’t that their job? What about his D opponent? Or are we so accustomed to

Yeah, it’s actually quite fascinating if you consider he was running in NY’s 3rd Congressional District- which is north west Long Island, northern Nassau county, and part of Queens. This is a population of around 3/4 million people and this is a very affluent area- its one of the wealthiest districts in NY and probably the country. I would assume the average constituent is well educated.

It’s not some podunk area in the middle of nowhere with a lack of local journalism or where you have a Republican winning a seat in traditionally Republican district.

The Republican Party, sadly, is doing nothing here- they have a narrow margin in Congress and McCarthy needs every vote he can get for his speakership. I guess there’s no problem with a representative who is incapable of telling the truth, so long as he voted the right way…

If the tables were turned and this happened in the Democratic Party I would hope they would oust him, but I’m not so convinced that would have happen. For either party, if they had a strong majority I don’t think they’d have any problem throwing him under the bus, but their calculus changes with a narrow majority. These days both parties are completely infected with a toxic “ends justifies the means” mentality. Personal integrity means nothing. It’s a sad state of affairs.

I know nothing of this man’s politics, but independent of his politics, if I had voted for him I would want him recalled. I don’t think most politicians can be trusted, but I certainly can’t trust someone who pathologically lies and has created a false persona. As a person who values integrity, loyalty, etc, no amount of apologizing can fix his reputation in my mind at this point.

I hope his constituents make the right decision and recall him. Ultimately he is their representative and it should be their choice how to handle this. I just don’t see how anyone could in good conscience maintain their faith in this person.

All of this is like blaming Hillary for Bill’s behavior.

The dude ran in a primary. Republicans in congress supposedly knew something was up. Blame them.
The problem is the brand is to be protected at all costs, we can’t be bad mouthing one of our own crooks, it will disillusion the base who might turn on us. Better to ignore and hope the don’t care about corruption if we promise them enough rightwing fantasies, tell them how much better they will be after democracy has been obliterated along with feeding them extra drafts of orange Koolaid.

At the same tine, you have to ask what’s wrong with Democrats and the press, why were they not pouncing before now? Or is this all the product of a reduction in standards of truthfulness and consignment as if the Democrats are tired of beating their heads against the wall with an electorate of sheep who just don’t give a damn, at least enough of them who don’t, and will lash out by embracing Bad…

What I coincidence, I used to work at Citibank too! …I mean I formerly “worked with” Citibank.

By “work with” I mean I had a credit card account with them.

———

Apparently he lied about the private high school he went to and having to leave due to his parents falling on “hard times”… interesting his parents were paying for prep school when he also claimed he grew up in “abject poverty”.

He apparently claimed Ukrainian ancestry, which is not the case either. This addition to his false claims about being Jewish, relatives in the Holocaust, employees being victims of Pulse Nightclub shooting, etc, etc. He can’t seem to help himself from pandering for victim sympathy.

Has anyone ever asked where he was on 9/11? I bet he was just about to step on one of hijacked the planes before something happened to make him miss his flight. Or has a harrowing tale of escape from the WTC.

All joking aside, there is one word to describe Santos (if that’s even his name) other than a “lair” and that is “sick”. There is likely a personality disorder at play. I hope he gets the help he needs. It’s doubtful he ever will.

Assuming he’s not a total criminal (which is entirely possible at this point), it’s probably entirely possible he could have won his race without the lies, deception, and so called “embellishments”.

Of all the biographical lies he told about himself, I can’t imagine the truth could have been disqualifying- again, short of being a complete criminal. I have no idea why being Jewish matters, who cares if you didn’t go to some elite high school etc. Evidently he’s somehow been independently successful. If he actually grew up poor and is now at least reasonably successful in spite of premier education and jobs, that’s a very good story. But even if he’s been living off his family trust fund, that’s not uncommon at all for American politicians.

Honestly, I feel quite bad for this man, it’s really quite sad. Imagine having to lie your way through life like this just to feel like you’re maybe good enough for others. Despite his outward facade (of whatever he has created), he’s clearly highly insecure and has terrible self esteem. Otherwise he could actually be honest with others as to who he really is and have the confidence to succeed on his own (real) merits and despite his (actual) deficiencies in life.

If this happened on the Democrat side you’d at least have some members in the party going ballistic. An oversimplification you have the corporate democrats and the progressives. Whichever he fell into the other would be attacking. If he was progressive I could even see some progressives gong after him. Remember they are supposedly the wing in charge of making everybody feel bad about everything.

To be fair it sounds like Fox News hit him pretty hard but we're still not seeing anything come from sitting Republicans in congress and it's a growing problem as this has a lot of traction and the more they dig the uglier it gets. They'll eventually be forced to address it.

Every time I see a photo of George Santos wearing his hipster glasses, I'm reminded of Rick Perry running for President in 2016 and getting glasses to help make him look smarter.

Yeah, that didn't work out so well. Oooops.

There is no recall mechanism for a congressional seat. He either resigns or McCarthy et al denies his seating. Neither is likely. In fact, I guarantee he will be seated next week as Moscow McCarthy fights to actually win the Speakership.

The only hope voters have is that he's left enough fingerprints on his possible crimes to get him indicted and eventually convicted: from voting fraud, financial shenanigans and possibly marriage fraud (there's some chatter that his marriage to a woman was for pay). Every day brings new revelations or expands on previous sleaziness reported.

it’s not even clear that the dude is a U.S. citizen.

Wonder who plays him in the movie.

I went to school with someone like this, anytime there was a discussion in class, they had a story for everything. Took a trip to Mongolia? They did too, and had a story. Lost your wallet in the Sahara on a journey? It will remind them of their trip to the Sahara. One of those kind of liars.

The problem is, as other members of Congress have shown, you don’t need to be honest to succeed. Or believable, or sane.

The GOP should start vetting candidates for a special election. This guy is not going to cut it. Regardless of whatever we outside the NY03 district may think, imagine what the voters who have put him on the brink of taking office must think as each new set of factoids rolls in to counter all the BS this guy Santos still has on offer.

Gotta love his claim now that he never said he was Jewish but since discovering his mother's heritage thinks of himself now as "Jew-ish." Seriously? I never heard that one before. That alone should sink his chances of being seated in January. I lived through 35 years of being active in politics in New York City and there's zero chance any pol there would utter such an assertion, including certainly any non-Jews chowing down bagels during their campaigns. So that expression must be going over great in the Long Island district in which Santos had campaigned.

Funded by Russian dough, huh. No wonder the guy's resumé sounds like one of those ready-made identities into which a spy can step after a few details are arranged. Just the details weren't arranged in this case. No dots connected. No one made a few deals to slide a few pieces of paper into the right places when "oppo research" (or counterintelligence) might come calling.

Poor Santos. Always a price to pay when you take money off someone with an agenda. I don't think he's going to be able to deliver, and I also don't think he'll be let off the hook by his benefactor.
