Russia-Ukraine

Now we now why they need NK to help out.

Russian total losses to date are estimated to be almost 700k. Hard to imagine a lot of Russians going "worth it!", but I'm not Russian.

In order to raise money to finance the war in Ukraine, Russia is fining Alphabet/Google for blocking Russian videos on YouTube. the amount of the fine is
2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 rubles

That is going to sting – except, the exchange rate would work out to about $33.

Say goodbye to Ukraine. Trump is going to hand it over to his buddy Putin and declare peace.
The Ukrainians and the Europeans will have something to say about that (though some in the EU will likely abandon the Ukrainians as well now). Having said that, the US is a large percentage of their ammunition supply. As Ukraine becomes desperate to survive while a despot’s forces ground them down, this war will get far worse. The only consolation is that the Russians themselves are in poor shape. A victory here may be incomplete and pyrrhic. That doesn’t help the Ukrainians much. The Biden administration badly erred putting so many unnecessary restrictions on the Ukrainians and themselves. But even that might not have been enough.

Yep, this pretty much seals the deal, I'll be surprised if Trump doesn't send Russia more troops TBH.

I wonder if Poland will consider more drastic measures?

In response to your comment, Scholz has apparently declared a no-confidence vote. This could lead to a slightly more aggressive German involvement in the war IF the CDU win and IF the AFD don’t make too many inroads. But who knows?

But yes, Poland, Czechia, France, the Baltics, the Nordics, the Dutch, maybe the Germans could make life very uncomfortable for Russia in Ukraine.

Hopefully one day we’ll get an accounting for why the Biden administration was so self-restrictive and hesitant in its decision making with respect to arms to Ukraine. Maybe there was a good rationale but from the outside, it made little sense.

Is there any reason for Poland not to do what NK is doing?

They wouldn’t declare war, since that would implicate NATO, but NK hasn’t declared war on Ukraine either, last I checked?

What North Korea is doing is worse than declaring war - but of course they are already a pariah and they don’t care about the lives of their soldiers (soldiers under a false flag with fake IDs don’t get Geneva Convention protection). Poland declaring war on its own would not actually implicate NATO, even a pan European force would not. However, Poland is a democracy and did not have a formal alliance with Ukraine. Thus they would have to make sure that the Polish people were actually on board - yes Poland historically hates Russia* and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is an acute threat to their security, but that’s not a guarantee that they want war - same for other European countries. There has been an alternate proposal. The French and various other have floated the following idea or a similar one: advisors in Ukraine to train Ukrainians (training inside Europe has certain disadvantages) and/or troops/air defense to secure Ukraine's West and North and allow the Ukrainians to shift all their resources to the front lines. European troops would not be in direct conflict but obviously the risk of an expanded war would greatly increase. Then again, it can be argued an expanded war is eventually likely if Russia prevails in Ukraine. So the Europeans will have some tough decisions to make.

*though there was a long time of mutual hatred with Ukraine too, both have reconciled in recent years, especially since the invasion, as a recognition by both that their past actions, the crimes Eastern Poles and Western Ukrainians hated each other for, were highly influenced by their shared history of being colonized by Russia
