Walt Nauta was arraigned today. If he’s wearing a wire, it’s not like we’d know. Just sayin’.
They (Trump,Nauta) have zero defense. There’s going to come a time - and we may already be there - that Trump’s bravado and mouth breathing may be futile. As President, he excelled at being able to fill the vacuum created when the FBI/DoJ and others remain silent to protect the integrity of their investigations. Trump was and is under no such obligation (although now he’d be helping himself to STFU), and he uses that to lie, promote conspiracies and drum up outrage from his supporters.
However, in a court of law, literally everything Trump has said is easily refuted by law. “These were my documents”, “I didn’t have the documents”, “I had the right to defy a subpoena” do not work in federal court. Those are signs of denial and delusion, and they will be seen as such - quickly - in court. He’s not going to be able to spend weeks standing in front of jurors saying “Jack Smith is a lunatic and Joe Biden has documents in Chinatown”.
I honestly would not be surprised if he tried to cut a deal at some point, though I don’t know if prosecutors would settle for that, given the brazenness of what is alleged. He would likely try to spin the deal as “succumbing to the mob to move my campaign forward”, but there may be limits to saying those things and upholding the bargain. Not sure what the laws say about that.
Either way, his house of cards arguments will quickly be brushed off in court. I’m astounded at how Trump’s BS is bought by so many, but I’d love to see the looks on the face of the judge and prosecutors if Trump’s lawyers try to make any of the arguments he’s making in public.
