I wanted to provide Herdfan with the chance to renounce fascism. If he doesn't respond, we'll know where he stands.
I'm guessing there might be three reasons why people knowingly or unknowingly support fascism:
- They don't have any idea what fascism actually means.
- They don't know how to recognize fascism. (Like Russians claiming to fight against fascism in Ukraine, when Putin clearly is a fascist leader.)
- They actively want fascism, because they believe it will make their lives better (and in some rare cases that will be true).
Points 1 and 2 are often a lack of education, which is why certain demographic groups can be swayed by populist media to support politics that aren't in their best personal interests.
Given the rise of the AfD (which is only slightly less fascist than the forbidden NPD), I would say even in Germany that education seems to be slipping, or a lot of people never received it. One of my colleagues told me that practically everyone but him in the appartment house he lives in, wanted to vote for the AfD. But according to him, those are mostly people with a migration background, and they don't seem to understand that the AfD is a party for racists.
Even I have a hard time deciding who to vote for. The traditional parties have become either way too right (CDU) or are just a joke now (FDP). The SPD seems to have dropped all its original ideas, and people who were put into concentration camps by the Nazis, because they belonged to the SPD, wouldn't recognize the party anymore.
"Die Linke" (literally "The Left") was a possible protest vote, but one of their current goals is to cut funding for Ukraine, which is a no-go for me.
All other parties are either radical, too small, or a joke.
In the US there are just two clear choices (does it make sense to vote Independent?):
- One party represents the upper 1%, which includes themselves. And they haven't made politics for the general population for decades. I can only assume that it is due to bad education and lies by populist media like Fox News that a lot of people a duped to voting for them.
- The other party is far from perfect, but they at least occasionally try to make some laws that are positive for the general population.
It doesn't help that a lot of Americans seem to think that social democracy and communism are the same thing. Communism was never implemented as Marx defined it, and it never will, because humans are egoistical creatures.
What I find odd is the fact that Americans are averse to paying taxes for public relief, but if someone is down on their luck they start a GoFundMe campaign and they often receive enough money.
But coming back to the original point, I called Trump a fascist during his first term, long before political analysts did so. I'm guessing they are hesitant to do so, because I doubt that I'm better at picking up the signs of fascism than a well-educated political analyst.
When Project 2025 was brought up during the election, Trump claimed he never heard of it, despite the fact that dozens of his ex-staff had worked on it. But Trump would never lie, would he?
Now that Project 2025 seems to be at least one of the major driving forces of the Trump administration (no doubt due to people like Stephen Miller), the previous outcry from the right about that program seems to have been silenced.
