Biden wouldn’t have been in the race to begin with if he didn’t believe he was the best person to defeat Trump. But he’s a savvy politician, and it became and was made clear to him that winning wasn’t in the cards after the first debate, So, difficult as it was, he bowed out and endorsed Harris.Biden is a very vain man. He resents Harris trying to distance himself from his accomplishments.
This is not the first time he has publicly said something that contradicts something she said. He holds press conferences during her rallies among other things.
As for his legacy, is not being the only person to beat Trump not part of his legacy. He has publicly stated he thinks he is the only person who can beat her.

So it’s not as crazy as you might want to think.
Since then, Biden has done his part at the convention and elsewhere, but has mostly stayed out of the campaign spotlight and done his job as President. That includes commenting about events and issues to the press.
Everything I know about Biden suggests to me that he cares far more about this country than about himself. Sabotaging Harris’s campaign for his gain is not in his fiber. As for his legacy, if Harris wins, she’ll build on the accomplishments of Biden’s administration, and those will be remembered. If she loses, those memories will fade as the progress is reversed, and Biden’s record of beating Trump in 2020 won’t matter.
