What Game You Playing?

Sept 2023
  • Starfield- Bethesda blockbuster, off to a good start after some issues with my hardware, specifically a 4k monitor trying to drive this game. I mean my computer is not that shabby, i7 processor, RTX 4070 graphic card, and it was the 4X monitor trying to push double the pixels as compared to my older 2k monitor, which pushed me down to low graphic settings in the game across the board. The difference is so great that the 2k monitor elevated me into high and ultra settings.
  • Skyrim- Another Bethesda power house I had played 11 years ago, that I restarted a month ago. As good as I remember it.
  • World of Warships- My only PVP game still chugging along, playing this with my son on a regular basis. The advantage here is 15 minute battles, get in and out if you don’t have a lot of time. Technically I would not call it pay to win, but you might be compelled to subscribe, and buy a couple of premium ships.
  • Star citizen- This game is ahead of it’s time, grand in scope, but is not ready for prime time. I’ve tried it multiple times and it’s basically a lag fest. You’ll be logged in, but items will be missing, like it takes another 30 minutes for your inventory to show up, or you’ll be at the tram station, the tram shows up, the door opens, but there is no tram. Don’t step in! :) Once I made the mistake of stepping into an elevator that was not there . Oh it’s there, just not drawn in, and fell to my death. And sometimes it’s a struggle just to get out of my bunk (game start position), not because I don’t want to, the server won’t let me. And there always seem to be issues with glitchy servers.

Replaying Space Hulk: Deathwing - Enhanced Edition

Space Hulk: Deathwing - Enhanced Edition

Discover the grim dark universes of Warhammer where there is only war. From Warhammer 40K. Space Hulk pits Space Marine terminators against Tyranid genestealers in the cramped confines of an eponymous 'space hulk', a mass of ruined space vessels melded together into a single deadly maze. Surprisingly the mod scene is strong & vibrant with new updates just this month

Game got off to a rough start in 2016 as was buggy and IMO unfinished. At least the dev team stuck with it and subsequently released the Enhanced Edition in 2018. Game can be very challenging and think that's why some put the game down, the enhanced version has been flawless for me. Difficulty is no joke especially if you want to 100% on the hardest level, but when you do it's earned not given...

Think the problem with Space Hulk: Deathwing is that many simply don't understand the game or it's lore. It goes back to the 1989 Warhammer 40,000 board game, which was notorious for the amount of space required and the extreme difficulty of play. There's been multiple digital iterations over the years all with the same brutally hard turn-based strategy. I used to play it on the Amiga in the day and while difficult was a firm favourite.

The Space Hulk 2013 & 2015 re-releases have just arrived on GOG so will like pick them up sooner or later Back to Space Hulk: Deathwing, the game is literally a representation of the original game only in the FPS format and that's what screws most people up. I don't know much about Warhammer 40K, but I do know about Space Hulk. What I see today on my display is exactly what I imagine the board game & earlier strategy based computer games would be come to life the 3D realm. Multiplayer amplifies further with more builds & challenges for the players.

Was going to write more words on this but it's already been done better here at:

Space Hulk Board Games: A History – Grimdark Gamer

Terminators vs Genestealers in tight corridors. Space Hulk has been one of GW's best games since 1989, and every edition is worth talking about. Those of us that get it, really get it...

I'm going through the original Final Fantasy VII from 1998 although with a lot of mods, including Echo S which adds voice acting. Finished FFVII Remake recently (only the first game in the remake series) but this is really fun. Really enjoying the modded original so far. The mods are extremely well done.

Scorn is designed around an idea of "being thrown into the world". Isolated and lost inside this dream-like world you will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion. The unsettling environment being a character itself. More of a puzzle based game than a shooter that plays at a slow pace. Gameplay is nothing to shout about, however if into HR Giger & Zdzisław Beksiński's work Scorn is a rare visual experience.

There's zero hand holding, but the accompanying The Art of the Game book (PDF) does help to explain the lore and offer some pointers. Scorn makes for a unique & macabre experience that some have tried to replicate. Wait on a deal as it comes up...

Your darkest fears will awaken in these woods.

It’s 1996. A young boy disappears in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland. As Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, you join the search. What starts as an ordinary investigation soon turns into an endless nightmare as you confront your fears and the Blair Witch, a mysterious force that haunts the woods…

Survival horror game set in the haunted forest from The Blair Witch Project (1999), where, in 1996, a man and his dog find themselves lost while helping a search party look for a missing boy. If you like the first film, you'll probably like the game... Cant say much as would spoil the plot, less you know the better with this one.

The Green Light (2026)
1782062222877.png

Fred is stuck in a dead-end job, haunted by hallucinations. A voice on the radio speaks of a green light. It promises peace and freedom. A tale of self-discovery where Fred is willing to find freedom, even at the cost of his life.

The Green Light is a short indie first-person psychological horror that looks to be interesting and for less than a dollar (discounted) worth a look at..

In Sound Mind (2021)

As you awake in the corridors of an inexplicable building, you find the environment takes on a life of its own and leads you to discover a series of victims, all exposed to the same experimental chemical. In your search for answers, bizarre visions emerge and introduce a host of imposing horrors…

In Sound Mind is a psychological horror game, featuring puzzles, unique boss fights, and an engaging narrative. Game was a really enjoyable surprise, not at all what I expected. Puzzles and the amount of exploration the game encourages, searching for collectibles & hidden details made every area feel rewarding to explore. The puzzles are smart without being overly frustrating, and the atmosphere mixed with the emotional story kept me interested the whole way through. More a ghost story, than gorefest and leaves room & time for the horror, exploration & narrative.
