Will Kevin McCarthy become Speaker?

It's kind of sad that for first-time members-elect, the swearing-in will be taking place in the middle of the damn night... with half the reps on camera now falling asleep or yawning. Usually it's in the daytime with the families, kids, photo ops on the steps and everything. Wonder if they will do some of the photo op stuff on Monday instead.

We’ll be lucky if it isn’t turned into a wrestling arena by the end of the month.

Round #15 vote was just the end of the beginning. McSpineless will have to contend with in-fighting, incompetence and self-sabotage. He's so shortsighted and just wanted the gavel at all cost. He basically begged away much of his authority. His Reign of Error will be short. I give him till the Summer. Maybe.

It was already looking like a prize fight of some sort during the 14th round when it became apparent that Gaetz was going to hang it up and prevent what the whips had figured would finally be a win for McCarthy.

McCarthy’s speech was ok in parts, terrible in others. He sounds like an intelligent Trump with little flair, though he is charismatic. He threw a lot of red meat to the loons in his party. A whole new round of investigations and “bombshells”, just with one side dismissing them and the other side cheerleading them on flipped.

The far-right sites are filled with outraged conservatives, angry at the holdouts for caving. They don’t like Jeffries either, but they treat McCarthy like they have the same agenda. Deep State/Swamp BS.

McCarthy won, but he gave the whole house away before he even moved it. Matt Gaetz was already lounging on the furniture before McCarthy could pick up the keys.

McCarthy’s victory is headline-making, he achieved his dream… but it looked like humiliating defeat in many ways. Just the groveling live on the house floor, the circus antics, members attacking other members. On January 6. After 15 votes and 4 days of theatrics. Total dysfunction and chaos 4 days BEFORE day one.

Let’s see how long before Gaetz goes ahead and makes use of some of those concessions. They can call for a vote anytime they want just to embarrass him, knowing it would fail but make a scene. The far-right will no doubt attempt impeachment and I expect them to start banging the Hunter Biden drum to death starting pretty quickly. Weasel Jim Jordan will be doing his usual schtick with his dumb questions and Chuck Schumer glasses on.

He begged an alleged sex trafficker for his vote on the house floor. He was DEAD-SILENT on George Santos and gladly swore him in. He’s hugging and kissing MTG and making deals with folks like Gosar.

Freedom Caucus can tank Republican votes. But they are a bunch of lying hypocrites too, and the comments on far-right sites will prove that. This was all personal and probably financial motivated for folks like Boebert and Gaetz. Whether it was calculated or a happy accident for them, they OWNED him.

Of course, he’s giddy and acting as if this was all a good thing to play out. They’ve worked everything out NOW so that everything will run smooth and efficient going forward. To hear him tell it, they played cards and smoked cigars while they discussed things and hashed it out, when in reality, one of his members had to be physically restrained from another.

Trump will hold this over his head. How long until he posts crap like “Kevin McCarthy, arguably the worst speaker in history - even worse than Boozy Boehner and Paul “Eddie Munster” Ryan. He never would have the job without my endorsement!”

I could could keep going…

Reign of Error. Hilarious... and right on the money. . Miscalculations, mistrust, malice aforethought running rampant in the hallways and cloakrooms, and taxpayers footing the bill on all of it. I'm not looking forward to all the BS investigations, that's for sure. Or the daily rise-and-challenge-Kevin routine either. Will they do it right after the chaplain's prayer each morning, or wait until mid-afternoon?

But the debt limit thing will be serious, and if McCarthy hasn't become Speaker Emeritus by then, that will probably be the time the right wingers try to drag enough other HFC members into the fray and boot him. McCarthy won't go for a default on our debt.

The thing is, no one who could get the votes will allow a default on our obligations either, so I don't see how they'd actually manage a vote of no confidence if they can't see a path clear to electing a different Speaker. And there's always Jeffries waiting in the wings if the R rebels manage to get help to boot McCarthy but then manage to mess up the count on a replacement. The margin for error is so unforgiving.... as they just helped demonstrate tonight when they thought they had it in round 14 and then had to go to 15, almost coming to blows to get there.

As for the next couple years... there's some song by U2 where Bono is singing about people who won't take chances and he says "you won't live any longer but you'll feel like it." Time crawls when nothing is happening. The line popped into my head because a lot of days in the next couple years are going to feel like centuries for Democrats. The Rs have their tried and true recipe for obstructionism. Investigate Biden, harass their own Speaker, harass the FBI, introduce go-nowhere motions to repeal the ACA or eliminate the EPA or whatever. We'll think we got stuck in a funhouse where they just play the same horror flick over and over.

Looks like he’s won over his party. I figured this would the case the entire time. A few people hold out their vote until they get their concessions.

I don’t have much of an opinion on McCarthy, I don’t know much about him, but I definitely don’t like concessions that provide the empowerment of the most radical factions of the Republican Party.

I’m not entirely opposed to trying to trim the budget in certain ways, provided it makes sense. I’m sure there are places the military budget could be cut, but given the current world circumstances and questions around our readiness (particularly in the Navy), now may not be the best time to make drastic cutbacks just for the sake of short term austerity.

I would also argue investing more in the defense of Ukraine will bring the war to a close faster than the current pace, let alone if we begin to make cuts. As it stands out aid is very much providing aid as needed. Part of this is to try to prevent escalation, but I think it’s evident there is some strategy to in effect drag out the war in order to deplete the Russian military as much as possible and to inflict maximum longterm/irreparable damage. It’s not illogical, especially when it’s not NATO troops taking the losses. But the longer this war goes on, the more aid Ukraine will need in every form.

I just hope they don’t spend their time with the political goose chases of Hunter Biden or “investigating Fauci”, whatever that means, trying to deny/deflect 1/6, etc that ultimately serve no meaningful purpose the public.

BREAKING(Borowitz): McCarthy Reveals It Took More Than 15 Tries To Graduate High School

Who wouldn't want to be represented by a politician blessed with that level of determination and tenacity? :)

I tell myself to admire McCarthy's ability to endure... and to emulate it while attempting to straighten out my studio. There must be 50 yards of fabric left lying about in there after the latest round of picking stuff for backings and bindings. Surely after 15 tries to tidy up, I'll have a functional studio again. Maybe even by the end of next week?! I'll be gone from here for at least the weekend to sort that mess.

I'm not even going to read my newspaper briefings today. Ignorance ain't bliss, but the only House I'm interested in for the next 48 hours is my own abode.

Gee all this drama on my birthday. I should remember to thank the producers sometime... /S
My mother’s home with Covid. She also has said she’s thankful for the entertainment.

I still think we’ll see Boebert and Green mud wrestling before the term is over.

Can’t wait now for Kevin to show his true colors and despite all his concessions, not give anyone anything he’s promised.

Looks like Rep. Mike Rogers was upset at Gaetz because Gaetz was demanding to chair a subcommittee Rogers is in line to chair…

Paywalled, but this is the source.

Gaetz was on multiple news sources claiming he had “run out of things to ask for”. That is such a brilliant statement. Gaetz can just claim he did what he needed to get all he wanted and string McCarthy along. And that’s probably not a lie.

*Just saw a clip of McCarthy groveling to Trump again.

Republicans both in the Freedom Caucus and rank and file have moved right or caved, they’ve given zero indication to indicate Hunter Biden, impeaching Biden appointees and Biden himself, demonizing the FBI and IRS, having hearings where I will be shocked if similar scenes of chaos don’t play out…

Hearing McCarthy talk about the “power of the subpoena” is hilarious at best. Subpoenas shouldn’t be any more or less powerful or respected based on which party is in office. People who were both subpoenaed, asked for pardons and deny the 2020 election and fought to overturn it are people McCarthy BEGGED and pleaded with, and rolled all the way over for. He literally let this vote come down to his biggest enemy in his rank, and he had to do all but get down on his knees to get him to vote “present”.

McCarthy said “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.” Well, the former affects the latter. And if this is how he’s starting, there’s no reason to think this will end poorly for him. If republicans still haven’t learned, something worse is coming next. That’s what history has shown.

Anything McCarthy wants to pass but has FC holdouts, his only chance will be to get democrat votes. But he will then be ripped for “voting with dems”. This is going to happen a LOT.

About ten members control the right.

It was an interesting bit of television spectacle.

It's too bad the democrats never got involved in helping McCarthy.....it would have been fun to see Gaetz have to weasel out of resigning.

McCarthy has routinely pandered to the Freedom Caucus and the loonies in the past, and that'll continue. I don't know if they'll really get so much more influence going forward.

The reality is that the R's have already drifted pretty far to the right en masse. Election denial and Trump worship remains pretty strong and isn't limited to some fringe element of the party. Whatever McCarthy actually believes, he's been going along with the party's general drift and we'll see him continue to do so.

One thing I keep hearing from the fringe-right every time the GOP does something questionable or makes a mockery of governing is “this is the way the founders intended it to be”.

That argument is getting old fast. There may be some elements of truth to public debate being healthy and debates within parties being constructive, that is not what we’re witnessing.

Part of me wonders if McCarthy had dreams of being Speaker or just getting the title and his name on a plaque. Is he as passionate about governing as Speaker as he is being called Speaker? If he is, then he can kiss that (much more important) part of his dream goodbye. If it’s not, then it explains the latter.

Well, they vote on the rules package tomorrow, so this will be a great glimpse at McCarthy’s ability to get votes together in his party. They’d be smart to prove the last week was growing pains and use the rules package - no matter how screwed up it is - to show unity and to have a quick vote. I don’t think that will happen.

Didn't they make it so only one or two people can unseat him for any reason? They're pretty much crippled and held hostage by the radicals at this point.
