Will Kevin McCarthy become Speaker?

Not a chance. He's loud and assertive, but MAGA folks are doomed to failure. He's also going to have the same problem as McCarthy. He's also black, and despite the denials, there's no chance for him to be anything more than a prop in the Republican Party. I welcome him to find that out the hard way though.
One thing is for sure, the inmates have taken over the asylum and it will be interesting to see how they proceed but they're fundamentally broken and dealing with their own civil war at this point.

Meanwhile, Democrats...

You think that would be their takeaway?

Emphasis on "should", because we all know whatever they gather from this, it wouldn't be the obvious truth. This is the boomerang of Trumpism. I would not be surprised if McCarthy is - now or at a later date - the next in a long line of republicans who only have the brass to speak the truth about Trump when their careers have imploded and they've got nothing left to lose.

McCarthy could have stood up to these asshats and maybe kept a little dignity, instead he sold it all piecemeal - well, about 90% of his power upfront and the rest over the last 9 months - and had the gavel stolen from him by his own tribe.

While its fun to see people who won't hold Trump accountable get in the gutter with each other, its not good for the body as a whole or the country, and I wish they'd just legislate, STFU and get along.

Within five minutes of going on the air tonight, Laura Ingraham found a way to blame Liz Cheney and Rep. Dan Goldman for McCarthy’s ouster. 😂

If I was Cheney, I’d call in and take credit, even if it wasn’t true!

*And just like that, he’s done.

Stick a fork in him then. I haven't looked at Fox but can only guess it's a total shit show over there right now.

Best comment I saw on Twitter:

“I think Rs should be forced to carry McCarthy to term, even if it endangers the life of their party”

I kid you not, I was brewing a joke about McCarthy arguing his dissenters were supporting late-term abortion, as he was just a tad over 9 months into the job.

Here’s the interim “speaker”. He looks like someone who can whip the rebels back into shape..

After everything he did, McCarthy claims the Democrats still offered him a deal but he refused “for the good of the conference” - not the country, the conference. Now we have no way of knowing if this is true, frankly he’d pissed the Democrats off so much I doubt it. But if so, it fully closes the door on the “Democrats didn’t even try to save McCarthy” line which was prima facie stupid anyway, as though the Democrats are responsible for saving his speakership from his own party. This suggests they went above and beyond to try and he rejected them.

Hence the biggest problem with our government today. Party > Country. :(

We need a legitimate 3rd party to reign in this nonsense from both parties.

What kind of nonsense is the Democratic Party engaging in? I don't see it (being a neutral observer, and not a member of any party), but you calling it out I'm assuming it must be pretty bad.

Serious, yes, biggest well, not really. We have some difficult problems that are bigger, I think. Churches comes to mind (not religion, but the churches).

Could help a wee bit. Allowing Parties to gain so much power, though, that is what has to end.

A third party wouldn’t help republicans, I don’t think. Maybe America, but we need a healthy Republican Party too. This is a cult of Trump problem. Losing elections doesn’t help them see things. In-fighting doesn’t help. They will just incorporate a third party into their conspiracies as they march down the path of white grievance. “The Democrats and (insert third party here) are conspiring to take out republicans and weaponize the DoJ”. Crap like that is all they are good for.

There is only one way out for republicans, and it doesn’t matter whether Steve Scalise is the speaker, or McCarthy or “Gym” Jordan or even Gaetz or MTG. The way out is to condemn Trump and Trumpism. But they can’t, for whatever reason. So they may or may not have another circus until a new speaker is seated, and then the whole thing will start over again.

As much as I hate to admit it, what you’re seeing in the USA is the loss of party power. While I disagree with equating the two parties, @Eric is right that in the “good old days” party leadership was enough to keep the extremists in check and do deals without destroying their own political careers. That party control over their members has broken down which has led to unstable Republican speakerships in particular. There are a myriad reasons for why, many of them mutually reinforcing, but that’s one cause of the problem.
