Russia-Ukraine

Ah the ICC stepping up about the child abductions. For both Putin and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova. Good. Unsure about enforcement as usually heads of state are given diplomatic immunity when traveling though diplomatic immunity can be revoked it’s usually an expulsion with arrests only being made at the behest of the diplomat’s government. At least, that was my understanding. Of course maybe sich immunity is negotiated beforehand and is so typically granted it’s treated as de-facto? In that sense it simply won’t be granted and he won’t be able to go … I wonder how this impacts travel to say the UN? Unsure how these things work.

There are 123 countries that are signatories to the treaty, and any of them are obligated to either try him or send him to the ICC if he sets foot on their soil - no immunity. Of course countries like India, the U.S., etc. are not signatories.

If he shows up in Geneva or NY for the U.N., he should be fine.

I know this is far-reaching and will never happen, but I feel like a certain percentage of our right-wing politicians need to be put on trial for being complicit. Putin is just going to needlessly carry on the death and destruction to both sides in the hopes that one of his useful idiots in the US will gain power and follow thru on their current rhetoric to just walk away. He really has no reason to not go with that option.

And even beyond Ukraine and Russia, this tells other countries we aren't dependable beyond a couple years. On top of that China is currently trying to negotiate peace or diplomacy between Ukraine and Russia and Saudi Arabia and Iran. So now we're both undependable and our top negotiation tools are punishing the poor with sanctions or turning the country into a bomb-pocked litter box while China will probably offer up infrastructure improvements.

I report. You decide.

The day China inserts itself we should be prepared with hard sanctions, a huge part of their economy comes from us, let them feel it.

MOSCOW — Chinese President Xi Jinping will head to Moscow for a three-day state visit with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week in which talks are expected to focus heavily on the war in Ukraine.

The announcement of the state visit — long anticipated in press reports — was made simultaneously in Moscow and Beijing on Friday.

A Kremlin statement stressed the personal nature of the visit — announcing Xi would arrive "at the invitation" of the Russian leader to discuss "issues of further development of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction between Russia and China."

I'm pretty ignorant on this, but I feel we are still highly reliant on China economically and they could just as easily return the pain in our direction. Also isn't China meeting with Ukraine if they haven't already?
China is meeting Russia as an ally and is mulling sending lethal aid to Russia. Most problematic would be if they started supplying Russia with artillery shells.

Economic war between China and the US/Europe would be bad for everyone yes. But we would have little choice if they proceeded with the above and that’s one of several reasons they’re holding off despite their claims of unlimited friendship with Russia prior to the invasion (another big one being how disastrous the invasion has been so far).

In a glriously weird rant, Igor Girkin talks about the battle for Bakhmut, comparing it to the defense of Stalingrad in 1942. Oddly, he seems to view the Russians in terms of being the Wehrmacht, only more adept.
*Inept I think is what you meant. Girkin’s satirical (often accurate) doom posting is great. For a war criminal, he’s pretty funny and offers an often perspicacious outlook even if it’s a complaint that the Russians aren’t being more competent (and sometimes that they don’t commit more war crimes). I just wish he was posting them from inside a jail cell in the Hague.

Given the strictures on such commentary, it’s amazing the Kremlin hasn’t prosecuted him … or even that he’s still alive given that he’s gone after Putin publicly and directly. His intelligence colleagues probably protect him to some extent and Putin apparently enjoys pitting his own against each other but as I said he’s gone after Putin himself (verbally).

Ukrainians arranged for a traitor to win a very special award.
I think Tatarsky was a Russian. Also while most likely Ukrainians killed him, it’s also possible given who he was and where he was speaking (cafe owned by Prigozhin) that this was an internal conflict.

Edit: so far Ukrainians are flat out denying involvement. But who knows.

Ah was he indeed. I couldn’t find that. I knew he was a genocidal twat, but everyone kept referring to him as a Russian, so I just assumed.

Edit: Oh yes here he is, started as a convicted bank robber three years before joining the 2014 Russian invasion. Only the best.
