USA Election 2024

Folks, it looks like the "election" is a done deal. I believe it is time for us to start a Clusterfuck II thread.

I’ve been speculating for some time that politicians as a class have and are becoming displaced by the new rulers of earth: tech oligarchs.

That politicians recognise their own increasing irrelevancy and powerlessness.

And that some have found an answer: populism, and especially Trumpism.

But here’s a partly related but much more astute analysis I think; a short, worthwhile read.

I really like the article. This is a global political crisis, not just limited to the US. Parties and ideologies need to develop and pivot to remain relevant and interesting. I have long felt that the "progressive political agenda" (I put it in quotation marks to indicate a certain vague sum of believes and ideologies) has suffered major marketing blunders and failed to convince the average voter in the last decade or so. One can definitely do better, but one needs to focus on critical issues and change the branding. Some elements of the ideology will probably need to go.

I guess we're no longer shopping at Home Depot because they supported Trump, I have accepted the election and that we'll have to deal with Trump but my wife is still struggling pretty hard with it all. I think a lot of women feel shafted.

Hopefully things will ease up over time, I've tried to steer the conversation away from him whenever I can but it hasn't been easy. He's like a virus that you can't get rid of and will be part of your daily life whether you like it or not.

I'm holding my breath on what the republican Senate will do with T's cabinet picks.
The obvious take is that they will want to avoid alienating the MAGA base (obviously paying with massive loss of institutional relevance).
But I wonder if there are enough R's that think this through a bit more, realizing that the chaotic shit storm that is about to hit our country will ignite a massive blame game, and that it may be wiser to be able to point to opposing T on his crazy picks if they are vulnerable in the coming mid term.

A major tenent of progressivism would be reining in business, which is to say, force business to be conducted responsibly, respecting the needs of people and community. This would have a non-trivial impact on profit and growth. Therefore, part of the budget of the largest corporations is directed toward insuring that "liberal" and "progressive" are, as much as possible, seen as undesirable, even dangerous or bad. Businesses need to make more money in order to fight the people who want them to act reasonably.

Hence, things like multiculturalism, language policing and sexual politics tend to get glued onto progressive movements, when they are really minimally relevant, because they are effective tools for defeating those dangerous people. Economics is the number one issue that the political discourse has to deal with: diverting the popular attention to squirrels makes the RW fight much easier.

I agree with leman & Yoused, but another point is that I have for a long time found that any point or position I try to make/take invariably is much more difficult to put into concise, punchy terms than the opposition.
Foreign = bad, replace taxes with tariffs on other countries etc. is hard to fight if you need several sentences to explain your argument...

Hope those Unions that sat out on an endorsement, and Union members who voted for Trump are happy with their decisions. Also answers why Bezos sat out on the WP endorsement. Mind you Trump II (This time it's Personal!), hasn't even started.

Let this live in your head as much as you want.

Haven’t looked into it yet but saw a YouTube comment that there is somebody out there who analyzes voting data and there were 30,000 ballots in NV and AZ that only voted for Trump, no other races or issues. Just Trump. That doesn’t make a lot of sense from their experience.

Found this.

I’ll just say this. The institutions aren’t there to protect you. They are there to protect the perceived legitimacy of the institutions. Nobody cares more about the perceived legitimacy of the institutions than Democrats. While Republicans are busy giving the institutions the finger, corrupting them in plain view, and dismantling them when possible the Democrats would rather take a loss without questions than suggest that everything we’ve witnessed over the last decade isn’t the result of completely fucked institutions that should have saved us from this a long time ago.

For a long time, “all politicians are the same” and “nothing changes no matter who wins” were valid points. But now, it’s an empty refrain that many in the so-called “middle” regurgitate over and over, when it’s actually not true.

People deserve with Trump whatever comes. They voted for him.

The problem is that those who didn't don't...

Agreed. But it’s the system we have.

The funny thing is, Trump won this election with a smaller margin than Hillary lost by.

The good news is, the people who voted for cheaper eggs will have to pay the same inflated price we do. They just won’t be able to bitch and moan. Well, they will, but I’ll just laugh.

I mean, it’s not like any of these rednecks shop at Walmart, right?
