Ron DeSantis: What in the ever loving fuck is wrong with him?

No. So then codifying it in Federal Law shouldn't be a problem. And for the same reason to codify abortion in Federal Law: to keep states from messing with it.

Just making them Class 3, same as a fully auto machine gun. Lot's of hoops to jump through.

And I personally am fine with expanded BGC's, but this will be worthless if other agencies don't keep their databases current.

And I am actually fine with Red Flag laws as long as there are severe penalties for false reporting and the accused is given their weapons back automatically once cleared. I know people on here have said there is no false reporting, so fine, there shouldn't be a problem with severely punishing them.

I think we're making progress. Thanks.

A friend of mine is a retired SFPD Lieutenant and was tactical response coordinator for shootings in San Francisco (such as the 101 California St mass shooting years ago). Here are his personal thoughts on assault weapons (copied from a social media post), having seen the carnage they produce. What are your thoughts on this:

"1. Ban Assault Weapons. 2. If you already have a banned weapon you MAY keep the weapon if you register it, but you can NEVER resell the weapon. Your hiers can NOT inherit the weapon. The weapon must be turned into law enforcement upon the owners death with a $1,000 payment to the heirs no questions asked. 3. You must posses a certificate of compliance when going to a range to shoot an assault weapon. 4. Bump stocks a felony. 5. No private party sales. All sales through a FFL dealer. 6. Mandatory background checks and waiting periods on all firearms 7. Persons on terrorist watch list or no fly list prohibited. 8. License to purchase required with mandatory gun safety course required. 9. 5150 detention, or history of same, automatic seizure of weapons with hearing required for return. 10. Must be 21 years of age to purchase or possess. 11. Ban high capacity magazines ( 9 for handguns, 5 for rifles/shotguns). 12. No ghost/non serial number guns. In a couple of generations the assault weapons will be gone."

The system is so corrupted by money.

But it's amazing how much of it is done in the open and so blatantly now.

Meanwhile, this activist supreme court is doing its best to rule that anything short of literally saying "Here's a sack of money I am giving you to pass legislation in my favor" doesn't qualify as bribery or corruption. Probably because Clarence Thomas has done everything short of that. Speaking of uncle Thomas, he has a serious "I hate humanity" resting face.

Biden's been zinging him, well played lol.

Clarence never actually got any of the bribes, the money only ever went to his wife, so, he is covered.

But that’s only if you buy his story that it was his stunt double who went on those extravagant vacations. He actually stayed at home to work on his hobby of making paper mache assault rifles out of hundred dollar bills.

Much like Trump's town hall I wanted no part of, all the political podcasts I listen to decided to do a deep dive analysis of DeSantis' announcement. Jesus, he makes me appreciate Trump.

This would be DeSantis running for office in 1920's Europe.

Host: What was behind your decision to announce your candidacy on the back of a Gunther's Waffle House menu?

DeSantis: Back during the Great War I got a lot of pushback for fighting the elite narrative by ordering the filling of all trenches which allowed our brave men to roam freely in the open fields and get killed by a clean shot instead of getting trench foot from hanging out in mud pits for months on end like a bunch of candy asses. That took courage, the same courage it took Gunther to innovate waffles.

Host: If you win the election what would your top priorities be?

DeSantis: I would leverage PSA's to announce the banning of the NTA, TSA, PTA, MBAs, the WNBA, and NWA. Not on my watch. I want to love you, PYT. You down with OPP? Yeah, you know me. Pass the syrup.

Host: What would you say have been your biggest accomplishments so far in your political career?

DeSantis: You don't have to answer this, but do you think Gunther thinks I'm cute? I hope he does.

Chris Christie is not going to win, but he is also not afraid of Trump and has come out saying things DeSantis should be saying.

DeSantis shot campaign ads with his kids that were just ego-porn for Trump. And he has yet to really challenge him. He’s probably going to be a gaffe machine, and his culture war battles won’t play well around the country.

Did not expect the GOP field to be this crowded this soon.

Or this toothless against Trump, who's smoking them all in the polls and seems untouchable, at least right now.

I have long thought the key to actually compromising on a lot of gun regulation is grandfathering people in to certain aspects. Whether it’s a right or an entitlement, things are very hard to take away from people once they have them. Grandfathering works around some of the concerns of existing gun owners.

The only thing I can say about assault rifle ban while grandfathering existing owners is you risk a massive run on people buying them before the law goes into effect. Even those who do may otherwise may not have.

At a minimum I think AR’s need to be treated similarly to how it works with in many states- minimum age 21, permit required, gun safety class (if nothing else so instructors help can weed out people that should not own guns), mandatory interview with local police + police interviews family, neighbors, etc. Age 21 should really be 25 though. Statistically this could solve a tremendous amount of problems- especially with mass shootings. I also think Juvenile criminal records should be open for the assessment of eligibility for some period of time of being an adult.

The magical thing about laws and regulations is that they can sunset. Data can be used to inform policy and prove that laws work. For example, make a law increasing min gun age to 25 (grandfather existing owners) for say 5 years and then reassessed based on predetermined goals. In that time if the stats show no improvements, then the law can be considered ineffective and expire. If it’s successfully impactful, keep it, having proven it works while still retaining a reasonable right to gun ownership.

It’s unfortunate that the media and politicians create this false binary if ban all guns vs “not another inch”. The former is not feasible given a strong pro-gun population, the latter is unsustainable. I think there’s a ton of room for possible regulation that does not impede appropriate gun owners.

That would be my guess.
No reason was given as to why the episode was pulled. “We don’t comment on scheduling decisions,” a Showtime spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

In a statement, a rep for Vice told THR, “As with all current affairs programming there can be scheduling changes, and we are very much still in discussion about the scheduling of this episode. We are proud of our reporting and of our continuing partnership with Showtime.”

The description of the episode, as seen on cached versions of the Vice page on Showtime’s site, hinted at potentially explosive material about DeSantis, who recently entered the Republican presidential race. The episode’s description reads in part, “Seb Walker investigates allegations from former Guantanamo Bay detainees that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis witnessed acts condemned by the United Nations as torture during his past service at the controversial detention camp as a Navy JAG officer.” (The “Chipping Away” part of the episode title refers to a different report on the “high-stakes race between the U.S. and China over the production of semiconductors.”)

I would guess fear of lawsuit is the case. I’m not sure they would have access to much information to discuss whatever role DeSantis had at Gitmo, other than the allegations of the former inmate that came up recently. Having uncorroborated testimony seems pretty flimsy.

I’m not sure I even understand the allegations of that case- that DeSantis was allegedly present during the inmate’s forced feeding. Forced feeding is not a pleasant experience and some believe it to be “torture”. It is however the standard of care in the US (and many other countries) for anyone refusing to eat inside or outside of prison, including anorexic patients. For hunger strikes prisoners are force fed once it becomes medically necessary.

To be clear- “forced feeding” aka gavage feeding is a medical procedure where a physician or nurse inserts a nasogastric gavage/feeding tube up the patient’s nose and then down their esophagus into the stomach.

As you can imagine, inserting and removing the tube is extremely uncomfortable. Having a combative patient does not make it easy and unfortunately restraints then must be used. Understandably such an experience can be traumatic for the patient. But the alternative is a horrific death and prisons are responsible for those in their custody.

I suppose there are ways forced feeding could be conducted in an abusive manner and perhaps at a point where it is not medically necessary. Or cases where perhaps medical staff is not involved.

The main argument against force feeding those on hunger strike is that so long as they are making decision in sound judgement, they should have the autonomy to do so, even if it kills them. But then one has to logically ask why aren’t prisoners allowed to kill themselves by other means?

To be fair to DeSantis, he got there in 2006 which I believe was well into abuses being brought to light and intense scrutiny. I would suspect he probably had some role at that point in ensuring Gitmo was operating within the law.

DeSantis sponsoring the removal of immigrants from Texas and displacing them in California (neither of which are his states) shows he's a special kind of asshole, he actually has me rooting for Trump to pounce his Fascist ass into the ground.

It’s as if Republicans don’t know California has a border with Mexico. I’d also like them to explain that if Democrats are all about open borders then why are they apparently only illegally entering through red states. You’d think they’d all be caravanning to CA where we'd let them all just waltz on in.

Cheap political points but I would also think that if/when it gets out to the general population it may hurt his standing in the mainstream outside of rabid Republicans. It's one thing if you're handling things in your own state but this is purely vindictive.

It’s all performative bullshit because they’ve got no solution to actual problems. I saw a comical montage of rightwing media reacting with disgust to the recent positive employment numbers. “But inflation!” To be honest, I don’t feel confident about the economy, but this kind of hysterics about even positive news is retarded. “We must fight job growth!”
